Conditions are now safe enough for officials to survey Helene’s damage.

The Crew-9 Dragon went up Saturday afternoon with two empty seats and will head to the International Space Station to bring two astronauts back to Earth in February.

So many people underestimated the power of the storm especially those inland. No one thought it's power was going to linger. This was a strange storm.

Praying for everyone to be found safe and alive and for the people, families and pets affected by this horrible disaster. 🙏🏻

I have a friend who lives just southwest of Asheville. She texted the morning before Helene arrived and knew it would be catastrophic, as in a 100-year flood. They had already been getting extremely heavy rain from the front that had moved in a day earlier. The track of Helene in that area was predicted by computer models a day or more before. Not a whole lot of time to prepare. But we should prepare for more storms like this in lots of places given how warm the water is, whatever the cause. God bless the people of western North Carolina.

People don't realize how bad it really is. There are towns in NC that are completely gone, wiper out, no longer there. Asheville is shut down because all roads are shut down. I live in the upstate in SC and they told us it will be over a week before we get power back. Few gas stations are working, few groceries stores are open. It's really bad

In Virginia, we have no power, in my car and been cooking eggs over candles, we are flooded and trees and power lines are everywhere! Signs blew off on the highway and wrapped around power lines, it's a mess! Southwestern Appalachian mountains in Virginia are just ignored, we are on our own.😔

I’m really shocked Helene still had that much power by the time it got to NC. 😢

At this juncture it may be salient to mention that Project 2025 recommends that NOAA, which includes the National Hurricane Center, be "broken up and downsized" because of its alleged role in what it calls "the climate change alarm industry". The document also proposes eliminating FEMA, shifting the costs of disaster prep and response to state and local governments. If prompted, I can cite sources.

These storms are having severe impacts further inland. That just doesn’t seem normal. Prayers for everyone!

Unfortunately there was a weather system in our area that caused 2-3 days of rain before Helene arrived. The ground was already saturated the water from Helene had nowhere to go the rivers and creeks were already high. The timing was unfortunate.

I feel so bad for all the residence and what they suffer. The power of water is never to be underestimated.

In the aftermath of Helene, benefit from my misfortune and do not compound your problems: beware of an outfit called “Samaritan’s Purse’. These people showed up in my neighborhood in NJ after Superstorm Sandy offering to help. I was away at the time and my wife let them in. The end result was over $10, 000 in property stolen over a couple day period. SP disclaimed any liability and said they really didn’t do any background on their volunteers and didn’t even have records of who they were. So proceed accordingly

This is eerily similar to hurricane Camille in 1969 that hit Virginia. I was only 8 years old and I remember it like yesterday. We’re in the mountains and had 2 feet of water running over farmland, not to mention in the hollows. Nelson and Albemarle county was completely devastated! Many dead were never recovered. Landslides, washed away roads and bridges. Even some houses were never recovered! A lot of the dead/missing were elderly, who didn’t evacuate b/c they didn’t think “just rain” would cause flash flooding. 😢
