Our weld procedure has a 1/8" gap and 1/8" land and we do it all day long.

While its not usually in the test procedure, I sometimes use three tacks. One at the top, and the other two about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom. That leaves one section that is pretty much overhead (4G) between the two tack on the bottom, and two more sections that run up the sides (3G) into the top tack (1G). This eliminates the need for a tie-in directly on the bottom of the pipe, which is very handy if its close to the ground or floor and its hard to make a perfect weld on the bottom of the pipe.
