An unmanned spacecraft named DART has traveled millions of miles through space to intercept and intentionally slam into an asteroid. The goal is to test this method as a way to prevent a future potential cataclysmic collision with Earth. NBC’s Tom Costello reports for TODAY.

Can’t they make cars that will go 1, 000, 000 miles on one tank?? I don’t believe this for one second

Where are Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Ben Affleck, and Liv Tyler?

If you want to nudge it you need to attach thrusters on one end and make it like a spacecraft and fire thrusters. Slamming into it won't work.

So your on a boat out in the middle of a lake and another boat is floating towards you. Both boats eventually crash into each other one boat is going to go one way and the other boat will go the other way. This is how space works. If we can do this successfully as others stated we might be able to move an asteroid by putting engines on it and controlling the speed of it so we can mine it.

What if they goof it up and send it towards the Earth 🌎😀

We need to prepare ourselves for the inevitable day when an asteroid comes from the direction of the Sun, heading directly for the Earth.
Let’s hope we have enough time to propel a Satellite big enough to change the course of the Asteroid

"this will not cause the asteroid to change course & impact earth Later at nasa headquarters "uhhmm, sir, we may have a miscalculation, we mistook a poppy seed for a decimal... The poppy seed appears to have come from a Dunkins bagel, oh, that asteroid is now heading straight for us" 🤔 meanwhile I wonder, was the bagel toasted & with cream cheese 🤔😂

2 friendly asteroids accompanying each other through time and space and humans knock one away from the other. Disgusting

Ok, he just said it.. they can see up to 100 years away… so if that’s the case is there anything heading our way soon then? I guess not.

While we're not under threat tonight, we are woefully unprepared for an impact with any asteroid now. We don't have one warhead on Earth that can impact an asteroid in space.
