NASA is preparing to crash an unmanned spacecraft into an asteroid millions of miles away from earth to test whether such a collision can avert a giant space rock from crashing into our planet. Former NASA astronaut and professor of mechanical engineering at Columbia University, Mike Massimino, joins News NOW to explain what kind of preparation has gone into the mission and how important the test would be if it is a success.

Congrats to my father for helping with this 👏

NASA has been doing impact studies for years. They did one on a comet. And there are more interesting techniques they could employ. They could send a lander with a solar sail and aim a laser at it and measure movement over a prolonged period of time. That would be more interesting than another impact experiment.

I imagine that no matter how successful this experiment is, that they will do one or two more for fine tuning purposes.

Would it not be more practical to deflect an asteroid direction course by other means rather than break it up which gives no control of the parts which break up through an explosion, one thought would be possible connection to the asteroid and then use a thrust power to push slightly and alter the course which might be able to change trajectory of the asteroid away from earth

Did they find that guy who forgot to install the bushing on the wheel of JWST? I hear he is looking for an asteroid to crash onto also...

We can reasonably recon that space rocks are a universal threat to every planet in the entire universe . Those planets with thinner atmosphere even small space rocks could be harmful .

Harry Stamper accomplished this 24 years ago.
