NASA successfully crashed its DART spacecraft into an asteroid in hopes of altering the space rock's trajectory. Scientists hope to be able to use a similar strategy to protect Earth from future incoming asteroids. Great job crashing and all, but how long to observe before we know if the asteroid's trajectory was actually affected?

Just to clarify, the asteroid we hit is the satellite of a larger asteroid that doesn't come closer than 4 million miles in its orbit around the Earth. It's nearly impossible to knock the satellite out of orbit completely. Our goal is to slow down the orbit by 10-15 minutes. The satellite will continue to be gravitationally bound to the larger asteroid
