NASA will test its earth defence technology when it launches a spacecraft into an asteroid next Monday.

The $AUD487 million Double Asteroid Redirection Test or ‘DART’ will test NASA’s defence capabilities in the unlikely event Earth collides with an asteroid

In a world first mission, the DART will target a small moon called ‘Dimorphos’ currently orbiting the asteroid ‘Didymos’.

The DART will collide with the moonlet at a speed of roughly six kilometres per second.

this is absolutely insane and unscientific in every possible way.

Yeah let's not do that. Leave them alone before you make them change course right at us or something

Aren’t we at a point in human history where we’re all but begging for a rogue asteroid to hit our collective arse with a ‘reset civilization’ impact?

It's just like us to over reach and mess things

And after angering the asteroid - it came for revenge.

Maybe first check it's course of direction.

Wait now, not long ago NASA had two shots at launching a rocket and both went wrong. Does this mean they can do it and just didn't want to or will this be another misfire?

This never goes as planned or as thought out as they think. Hopefully this doesnt hit earth and cause an actual apocalypse.

We should all pay for this service, an asteroid tax is coming.

And has anyone thought about the consequences of the changes in orbit and potential ramifications into the future ??

It's all and everything is by design; keep in mind by altering its course a possibility of disrupting the purpose thereof could be more destructive than what it's supposed to achieve and cause more damage in the near future!.

After they knock Dimorphos off its orbital track and alters its course, where will Dimorphos travel for next million years ?

First they have to get through the firmament and get to space. Trying to break through the firmament is more like it

I’m in meteor hunter. I don’t think this is going to end well. You need to push in the meteor Away from the collision. However we are going into one of the major meteor streams at the end this month. Don’t look at your phone, Look up
