How to Tell If a Mystical Experience Is Real

Mystical experiences are necessarily subjective. There's only one documented case of a jointly shared one. So is there any way to test them in to make sure that what's being experienced isn't just wishful thinking, imagination, or psychosis? The sixteenth-century Carmelite St. Teresa of Avila answers in the affirmative, and offers three guidelines by which to discern genuine mystical experiences from counterfeit ones.
