I get Calypso lives in isolation, but after realizing she forced him to be her husband under the influence of her spell for 7 years, knowing he was married, I don't feel too bad.

Oh god I just got a dark thought. You remember how Calypso said Goddeses can’t die. What if Calypso tried to end her suffering multiple times, but couldn’t because she was a goddess.

IT’S BEEN LESS THAN 24 HOURS I THINK AND THIS IS ALREADY DONE AND DONE SO BEAUTIFUL TOO OMG i cried when ody shed a tear himself and the fact that he’s not completely nonchalant and does actually feel sorrow for calypso and omg calypso i feel so bad for her omg and when ody hugged her omg this is beautiful 🥹

"I'm sorry if my love is too much for YOU" Ah the passive aggressive tone

Love the way you showed time passing by Calypso’s different hairstyles!

Honestly, I think the end of the second verse was Ody realizing that he and Calypso had one horrible thing in common: They were both stuck in a place they couldn't call home, where they were separated from any and all loved ones. He had pressed pause on her suffering while he essentially took her place as the one in that pain, and it was a wound they could only pass back and forth, but never heal. And his conviction to make it home didn't waver, but that didn't stop him from feeling sympathy for her.

Calypso, especially under the interpretation that she's *also* trapped on Ogygia, is such a tragic character. I don’t believe she was in love with Odysseus, but it was the closest thing she could feel to love after being starved to death by a lack of love, affection, no less plain social interaction. It's a suprise she wasn't a jibbering mess falling apart at the seams by the time Odysseus arrived, thinking he was some kind of hallucination.

And when Ody shows up it's, like... the first person she's seen in centuries. Of course she's going to latch on to him in a ferver and never let go, because she's so desperate for a connection of any kind, and it blinded her to the pain she was putting him through. And, yes, you could say that her apology here is a fake apology, but can you blame her for struggling to sympathise? His Hell is her Paradise, and now he is condemning her to Hell in turn by leaving. She's going to be alone, again. She's going to be alone, stuck suffering with the knowledge that she fucked up the first and possibly only human connection she's had and might ever have. Epic is it's own thing, but it wouldn't surprise me if, as in one later tradition, Calypso kills herself after this.

I do appreciate how this humanizes her. She’s still not sympathetic but you can understand why she did what she did.

I was waiting to see the animatic for this if anyone will portray how Calypso tries to convince Ody that she did out of sincere "Love". I love this so much!

I love how people are seeing this song in so many ways. My original interpretation was that they spent the 7 years basically as roomates; with Calypso constantly hoping for more, but never forcing herself on him. In that case, the "I love you, but not in the way you want me to" was real. And since I'm ace, I really do feel like that can be a powerful thing... to love someone with your whole heart, but not in the way they want or need. Or even in a way that you can provide.

On the other hand, I've seen a lot of takes (and the Odyssey itself, apparently) where Calypso was undeniably an abuser. The song becomes so much more chilling in that light.

Reminder: Calypso in Epic is explicitly of sound mind. There's no curses, if there were, 'Guilt Trip: the song' would be the time to bring it up. That means she chose to be the difference between Odysseus meeting his son at 13ish and 20. Her actions kept him out of Telemachus' childhood entirely

I love the twinkle of the tears shimmering in her eyes at 2:22 and great work all around, but I genuinely think Epic!Calypso ALMOST managed to get through her "goodbye" to Odysseus without crying. It HAS to be when Ody says "but not in the way that you want me to." THAT'S the moment where her composure breaks and she can't fake it anymore.

This song is the definition of "hurt people hurt people" and I love it.

Im honestly kinda shocked at the lack of empathy and sympathy being shown for both of these characters in this comment section tbh.... I feel for both of them for both are experiencing different forms of tragedy one is easier to understand than the other at least to me anyway. Open arms everyone
