It’s so funny that they said it wasn’t all sausage and pretzels, and then the guy offered a sausage dish. Love it. Now throw a slice of cheese and pineapple on toast.

The oldest known strudel recipe is from 1697, a handwritten recipe housed at the Wienbibliothek im Rathaus.[3]

Whether as a type of sweet or savoury layered pastry with a filling inside, the strudel gained popularity in the 18th century through the Habsburg Empire (1278–1780). Austrian cuisine was formed and influenced by the cuisines of many different peoples during the many centuries of the Austrian Habsburg Empire's expansion.[4] Strudel is related to the Ottoman Empire's pastry baklava, which came to Austria from Turkish via Hungarian cuisine.[5]

And you could add Swabian Maultaschen and Linsen (lentil sauce with a touch of vinegar) with Spätzle (homemade noodles), or Geißburger Marsch (a hearty soup with beef, Spätzle and potato).

If you're in the South of Germany, try Maultaschen with Potato salad. Leberkäsbrötchen is also delicious and usually eaten during lunch time. Or Schnitzel and Spätzle.

German food is also a lot of soups and stews.
We often don't suggest soups to foreigners, because we see them more as a starter, but in my opinion Grießnockerlsuppe, Leberknödelsuppe, Kartoffelsuppe, Pfannkuchensuppe and Spargelcremesuppe are some very typically German and delicious foods.
And Eintopf is probably the only dish that isn't regional, but consumed all over the country.

Marinated herring is done not only in Germany - Poland and Sweden as well. I think it's a northern thing

I stayed with a German family for 3 weeks in 2000. While they introduced me to several German dishes, the one they made for a nice Sunday dinner with family type meal was rouladin. Thin cut steak with a layer of mustard and then rolled around carrot, pickle and a few other items (sorry its been far too long), then braised in a tomato sauce. It was wonderful.

These foods are all pretty amazing and I love Marinierter Hering. But I would really like to add that Eastern Germany, the area of the former GDR, has lots of particular dishes too. Usually when people talk about German food, it's really only the Western parts. Just to add that for more completeness.

Why is there no Königsberger Klopse and Rinderrouladen?

I think you'd enjoy the stuff of Germany's former colonies in Africa, such as Namibia (which isn't just in German influences either, but has different kinds of Namibian food as well)

Thank you for not only including food from southern Germany!
But traditionally Sauerbraten would be made with horse meat. I have only ever had the beef version though as horse is not as common anymore.
