Arch Linux: full install on VirtualBox

This video was recorded last week. It is an update to the Arch Linux installation on VirtualBox which has been requested some time ago. We install it from scratch with the XFCE4 desktop environment.

Took me over 1.5 hours but I did it without any previous vm or linux knowledge, had to look up a short tutorial on Vim to uncomment and save properly. The installation was perfect thank you very much sir.

Thanks a metric tonne brother, I've successfully installed Arch Linux in VBox. I've checked tens to fifteens of tutorials, but all of them showed errors. I got the display manager, and I felt like floating. Thanks a lot :)

For anyone who is getting the "REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED" in the terminal after trying to SSH their Username.
Put in the command ssh-keygen -R [hostname]
It will forget the IP you put in and you can continue

Thanks for this! I'm a complete noob and was able to get it working. However, I had issues with the newest virtual box (6.1), but this tutorial worked with vb 6.0. I'll probably try to get it working on the newest version of vb, but for now I'm just happy its working

Just installed Arch on my physical machine the other day. I don’t think you need to pacman install Reflector anymore. The latest Arch iso seems to run Reflector for you on initial boot up. My mirror list was already sorted by speed and location automatically:)

1. Install reflector, openssh(optional)
2. systemctl start sshd and connect using ssh(optional)
3. timedatectl set-ntp true
4. reflector -c <Country> -a <hours> --sort rate --save /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
5. Refresh servers
6. See storage devices (lsblk)
7. gdisk /dev/sda
8. mkfs.fat -F32 /dev/sda1
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda2
9. mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
mkdir -p /mnt/boot/efi or without efi
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi
10. pacstrap /mnt base linux linux-firmware vim
11. genfstab -U /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab
12. arch-chroot
13. dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1G count=2 status=progress
chmod 600 /swapfile
14. mkswap /swapfile
swapon /swapfile
15. vim /etc/fstab
Last line: /swapfile none swap defaults 0 0
16. ln -sf /etc/localtime
hwclock --systohc
17. vim /etc/locale.gen and uncomment your locale
locale-gen
echo LANG=<locale> >> /etc/locale.conf
18. echo <hostname> >> /etc/hostname
19. vim /etc/hosts
Type:
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost
127.0.1.1 <hostname>.localdomain <hostname>
20. passwd
21. Install grub, efibootmgr, networkmanager, network-manager-applet, dialog, os-prober, mstools, dosfstools, base-devel, linux-headers, cups, reflector, openssh, git, xdg-utils, xdg-user-dirs,
22. grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=GRUB
23. grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
24. systemctl enable NetworkManager
systemctl enable sshd(optional)
systemctl enable org.cups.cupsd(optional)
25. useradd -mG wheel <username>
passwd <username>
EDITOR=vim visudo and uncomment 1st wheel line
26. exit
umount -a
reboot
27. Install xf86-video-vmware, xorg, lightdm, lightdm-gtk-greeter, DE, browser
sudo systemctl enable lightdm
reboot
