I've been using the same Arch install for seven years and within that time I even changed computers and simply moved my hard drive contents to the new one and made any necessary changes. I update every day, sometimes more than once, and haven't had any issues. Sometimes a package will require manual intervention, but Arch is targeted at competent Linux users after all, so the manual intervention isn't a hardship. I totally agree with not installing outdated packages. That's just playing with fire.

The real question is : HOW DID YOU MADE THIS VIDEO THIS STABLE WHILE YOU WALKING?

Only Chris Titus can talk about making a Linux distro stable while walking in a jungle😂

me: your hard drive is dead. we need to reinstall and restore from your backups, you do have backups, right?
customer: <dumbfounded look>
me: <lesigh>

Pro Tip:
Instead of complete backups use a separate Home partition.
There is really no need to backup the root file system. That stuff is mostly of no value except the etc configs maybe.
Having a separate home also makes it possible to switch between distros while keeping your private files.
I don't say don't do backups! Do them always! But a separate home partition is one extra layer of separation that isolates the important data from stuff you don't really want to backup

I've been using arch on and off for years. I have it installed now for about 18 months and have to say it's perfectly stable, and I'm running the latest kernel and for the most part bleeding edge software. I think the main problem is you have all the options in the world to cock it up and the people that tend to install it are also the type to tinker and make a balls of things.

Chris I have mad respect for you as being one of the biggest if not the biggest linux channels to be talking about Arch so positively. It's a wonderful distro and the world is a better place with more adoption.

So are you just trying to imitate luke smith by walking out like that?

I find Arch to be more stable and reliable than Ubuntu. Whenever something went wrong with my Arch machine, it was always my fault and I knew what I did wrong (and that provided a good clue to what to do to fix it). Whenever something went wrong on my previous Ubuntu machines, I had no idea what happened nor how to fix it.

Rule 1 of Arch Linux - it's always your fault. I still wish I knew where my conky went to though,

I've been updating multiple times a day for 1 year and a half and my system is perfectly fine. _knocks_ _on_ _wood_

Holding updates back and pining the kernel is basically the Manjaro way to Arch

Great advice.
I've been using Arch now for the last part of this year having ditched Windows completely.
Before updating, I always use Timeshift. It's so fast at backing up and restoring. Every time I backup, I delete the oldest one after testing the system with the new updates. I always then have 2 solid backups if I need them.
In the beginning I had to restore as I was learning to understand the way Linux works and the differences between Arch packages and AUR.
Great linux OS.

Ok, thanks, that‘s just what I thought after using Manjaro at home for some months. Now I think I will also use it at work and dismiss all the people saying that arch-based distros are not/less stable than debian/ubuntu. Some things you say are already inherent in the philosophy of Manjaro to make arch stable.

Handling of kernels is one of the reasons I love Manjaro.

From personal experience I've gotta say timeshift has saved me so many times its a must for any linux distro!
