How To Stop Wasting Money On Clothes You Never Wear

Today we're talking about techniques to help you stop wasting money on clothes you never wear 💰 This video is broken up into 3 parts...

Part 1: How brands get us to buy more!
Part 2: How to understand your personal style preferences
Part 3: Bonus tips & an exercise

This video was inspired by a reel I saw on Instagram. It was a video of a woman in a peasant dress, frolicking around the fields doing her important "farm work", that quickly cut to a video of another woman on the farm doing ACTUAL farm work. This second woman was muddy and was wearing real farm clothes (Instagram vs. reality type thing!)

This got me thinking about marketing in the fashion industry, and how brands can sell us the dream through their marketing and advertising.

This can often lead us to buying clothes that we hardly wear, because they don't fit our lifestyle.

There are many other reasons we might waste money on clothes we hardly wear, and I talk about all of them in the video!

This are my fashion tips: 1_ eat well 2_exercise 3_sleep enough 4_create meaningful relationships with humans 5_stay clear of trends . Voila any clothes would look fab on you because you will feel great (HEALTHY physically and mentally) and clothes won't be your "plaster" to feel good.

Dressing your fantasy self is expensive and wasteful. It took me until my early 50s to realise this. The last few years gave me spare time to binge watch YouTube for videos like this. I wish this had been around in the 80's. I would have saved a fortune on flouro clothes and saved a lot of landfill too

The fashion industry itself has made me a more conscious consumer because the quality and construction is so poor currently and I refuse to pay for junk. Scouring second hand slows down the shopping process, I’m able to find better quality and I’m keeping something out of the landfill.

I do buy for fantasy self, but I wear the clothes! I've found that its just as easy to wash a floaty linen dress as Jean shorts and a t-shirt. I live in a small town in Indiana but I just can't accept jeans, t-shirt and sneakers everyday of the week!

I love that you said to ask ourselves if there is an activity that we have too much clothes for or one we don’t have enough for. I am a stay at home mom and for the longest time I didn’t have beautiful and comfortable lounge pants so I would either wear my pajamas until it was time to go out or wear outside clothes like jeans but they didn’t feel comfortable to lounge on the couch with the kids. It has been two weeks and I finally have some elegant lounge pants and I feel so good wearing them.

Lifestyle and the fantasy self…..oh boy. I retired 2 years ago and everything with the way I dress changed. I worked in the beauty industry for 4 decades so I dressed well every day and loved it. Now I stay home about 5 days a week…. Had to learn that I simply don’t need many clothes anymore. I have to constantly remind myself not to buy things because they simply don’t fit my lifestyle anymore.😅

It took me years to realize I had two types of wardrobe: one that is very simple and neutral and that I actually wear ...and a second wardobe that I would buy "fantasy" clothes, clothes for a future profession, clothes that I saw in a movie (peaky blinders!!! ) and so on. No need to say, I hardly look for the second category when I dressing myself. As someone said on the comments: waste of money.

When I became a mother I had to accept the fact that I didn’t wear things I had to hand wash, iron, or take to the cleaners even though I loved them.

There was an old book in the 80s called Color Me Beautiful. It helped me find my color palette and style. It saved me so much time and money! I may want to buy something with ruffles and flowers, but I now know I won’t ever wear it or feel comfortable in it. I notice what I really wear in my closet: understated natural textures and shapes, good fabric, no shiny silk. But that’s just me. One of my elderly friends looks fabulous even now in ruffles and lace.

I think learning what fits/cuts you like is vital. For example; I hate turtle/mocknecks, i bought one a while ago because of how “versatile” they are and every time I tried wearing it I would change before leaving the house because I couldnt stand the fabric on my neck.

Also, may I add go in store and try a similar frame of a dress or top in store before buying it online. The cottage look and puffy shoulders are not for my build. I learned form fitting suite me best but not super tight. I like body suits shirts that stay in place versus t shirts. One thing I need to stop is "I can buy this if I ever go to" or shopping out of boredom...😅. One thing is in the summer I like festivals and concerts so summer clothes are worn.

I've recently decided that whole "what season are you" thing actually makes sense having watched a crapload of Carol Brailey videos. Wearing colours that showcase the people wearing them, and seeing brighter, clearer skin, has completely convinced me. I'm decluttering so many things I thought I'd never get rid of, but I can't unsee the change now that I'm wearing "my season".

I'd give this video 10 likes if I could, going beyond what other content creators are offering and there's much to think about. Have been an enthusiastic op shopper for 40 years curating a working wardrobe that I've loved and enjoyed. Now in retirement I realise that op shopping has become more of an obsession (a way of filling a void) resulting in purchases for a lifestyle I no longer have. One form of "diversion" therapy that seems to be working is spending time in the great outdoors learning and foraging for edible ingredients. Does anyone see a transferable skill here? 😊
Fanta seen here wearing one of my favourite colours is such a bonus. Will watch this video again, even in my 70s I'm learning and evolving.

Secondhand shopping has impacted my closet and budget, especially since it’s so easy to checkout over mobile apps. I’ve recognized this and took a pause. Great video and tips.

The fantasy self was something I never had words for, but it’s exactly how I’ve approached fashion in the past…but no more! I want a wardrobe I love.

It’s quite funny, we fantasise over this ideology that isn’t practical at During winter/Sprong, I literally wear the same things. So I only own 2 trousers for summer, 2 wool trousers for winter and 2 leggings. Then 3 jumpers. I keep rotating and I don’t need more. Summer is my weakness though 😅
