The real dopamine comes when you have zero debt AND you have enough savings to handle any emergency. This Memorial Day weekend my water heater sprung a leak. I called a plumber immediately and they'll be out at my house next Thursday to replace the water heater. I have the money in the bank to pay for this big house repair. It feels so good not to be throwing the repair on a credit card. Priceless!

My husband is like this. I handle the bulk of our finances and I checked our Home Depot store card today (we’re paying off our zero turn mower) and he’s spent $1, 600 on who knows what in the past 45 days. Apparently it’s on file at the store. I told him we can’t out earn stupid spending. Period.

Simple solution: put into the budget a monthly allowance for personal spending for each of you; this is money you can spend without asking your spouse. The rest of the budget you always decide TOGETHER.

If you’re in a no debt other than home mortgage situation, it should scare you to take on debt. It should scare you not to have an emergency expense fund. It should scare you not to have at least 3-6 living expenses in the bank.

Those are healthy “scares”. And if you have all that sadly covered, those “scares” disappear.

Emotional momentum -- that's what happened to me with student loans... I'm on my last big ones now but it helped being able to stomp through the small ones first! These last three were 1/3 of the debt but getting through the 16 smaller ones felt good and gave me the inertia to slug through these final ones.
