I've specifically held off on smart home stuff because of the issues that Matter SHOULD solve. I'm hopeful by this time next year it'll be a much improved landscape for everything.

If only Google would stop making us say "Google" as wake up, they would rule the smart home scene

best explainer of Matter - great to see it is coming - David knows and he tells it very well - now the EU will be very happy - all Matter devices must connect using USB C

I'm surprised there's so little said about zigbee, z-wave and Home Assistant. I think that the big 3 are not that popular in Europe, there's a huge market of other devices and even whole ecosystems. And Home Assistant is bringing everything together into interoperability.

I also can't wait for everyone to support the same standard, but I think I will stick to Home Assistant to manage because it is so powerful and it still allows to connect together things that were not intended to be smart - like power inverter, old-ish projector etc.

It wouldn't surprise if Matter was motivated by a new EU law or regulation... I love when corporations have to comply with EU laws making our lives better

thread = a more open zigbee mesh (it is open but with a lot of manufacture made incompatibility) and matter = a more open homekit (homekit is all local as well, matter works in a similar way but to other brands)

I don’t think people realize how big this is. It blows my mind that all 3 big players in this game are supporting it with open arms. This is going to bring smart home products to so many new homes. So many new, amazing products

Matter/Thread is basically all the benefits of HomeKit being brought to the other platforms in exchange for Apple getting the other devices in their ecosystem

@9:46 Connectivity Standards Alliance

What's great about Matter is that it will open up the smart home world beyond those willing to dive into Zigbee and Z-wave hubs like SmartThings, Hubitat, and Home Assistant. So now you'll be able to set up more smart home things for your relatives who don't want something that "just works".

@Andrew - What smart switches do you have installed?

@14:44 - Or get a smart switch that supports Smart Bulb Mode! This would allow you to turn the bulb "On" from the switch while still allowing the bulb to maintain full power. The benefits of a smart bulb would allow you to have the "lights" come on at a lower level at night so that you don't blind yourself. Smart bulbs can also let you set up a circadian rhythm effect which changes the color temperature of the bulbs throughout the day.

Love the inclusion of more of you on the podcast, and the producer cam is great. Big fan of Waveform 2.0, the dynamic is better than ever!

Matter sounds like it could be great for home automation too. Since it helps everything work together better.

I actually think making Matter a standard is good, and I think they could and should expand that to include smart tags. (I.E. air tags, tiles, etc.) . Also have NFC standard on devices as well..

I have over 100 smart home devices including And automation has been a pain in the ASS! I'm ready for Matter baby!

They have not released support for video yet for Matter. So no cameras and video doorbell support yet. That’s hopefully coming in release 2

Another great thing about Thread is that the thread devices don’t connect via WiFI so it’s less IoT on your WiFi routers

Oh, @marques, use the Phillips hue switch!

As a HomeKit user, I'm happy to see this. Hopefully my Ring Doorbell will be able to have the stream show up on my TV now.

Omg that comment of (get smart s smart switch instead) of a smart bulb is sooo true!!! But if a may add more to that, ((get wifi or wait for a matter smart switch)). Zigbee struggles to bridge communication and if your house is relatively big or has big sealings this will be a huge issue for your smart home. I have spent a ton switching brands and mix-matching bulbs and ultimately landed on smart switches. I got tired of guest turning off my switches which disrupts my home automation. x(

I am always a little confused when coversation about smart homes come around. I have been using Homeassistant for 5 years, it's almost 10 years old and it has come a long way, it litterally does everything they are talking about on top of being much more customizable and powerful than consumer products.
Now it has come to a point I would suggest anyone to give it a try, it's not developer oriented anymore while keeping the possibility to code on your own if you ever decide to do so

In all seriousness though, they added a lot of clarity to this. I only remember seeing it in the Apple settings but wasn’t aware of what it was and at first thought it was some new Apple walled garden shenanigans. I sincerely hope this protocol is actively supported and maintains, usually these things can fall apart upon launch or a few years into actions.

Can’t wait for Matter to kick in. I’ve Alexa at the moment (as it was a cheaper entry to smart stuff) but having bought into the smart home experience I’ve been wanting to move to HomeKit to fit in with my main ecosystem, this will allow me to do that.
