Berlin the only city in Germany where you can live without specking a single word German😂

I feel this, a while back, I heard few people talking English and then I was like, “that’s so strange… I think I knew exactly what those people were saying that passed us.” and my husband said, “I would hope so, they were speaking English.” (Moved to The Netherlands from Oregon, USA).

I‘ve been there!!! My German understanding greatly improved when I would listen to text and read it at the same time. I studied at Goethe Institute and they had a lot of resources for this. Transcribed podcasts are also great. But someday, it will happen…you‘ll wake up and your subconscious brain will start to take over, and you won‘t have think think through the gender of every noun, the possession case and any trennbare verbs before you can speak a sentence. It will come. 😊

A funny thing happened to me when I moved to Ireland. I didn’t understand the English that is spoken here at all. I still have my old employee ID with the photo showing me with a facial expression of shock and disbelief, because at the time I didn’t understand that when they asked me to take a seat this was to take my photo for the employee ID. 😂
The funny thing was that after two weeks I stood up in the morning and suddenly could understand everything that was said as if someone had stuck a babel fish in my ear that night. 😂

I respect everyone very much that is so brave to move so far away from home and adapt to all the new things. Such hard work! Keep going, you're doing a great Job!

My mom is from a small village outside of Ravensburg and I was actively taking German classes the semester my grandmother passed and we went to her village for the funeral. I was so ready to understand and even participate in conversations, catching up with family I hadn't seen since I was a kid... Then I remembered that everyone there would be speaking Swabian. I sat in a restaurant booth for 6 hours drinking a Radler and trying to look engaged while slightly dissociating 😭

Be proud of yourself for learning the language. I lived in Munich in the 1980's and I took German in school. It's an awesome feeling. I hope to return to visit soon. I live in California, but I miss Germany.

You are a wonderful comedian. Just by looking and reacting...no voice over needed and we understand 🎉

When I immigrated I thought everyone in America learned Spanish too. After moving to Oklahoma I now know I just lived close to Mexico.

So Funny!! 😂 I’m Swedish but when I travelled to Denmark I realized that Danes understood Swedes perfectly fine BUT when they answer in Danish I can’t understand a single word… so my new tactics were to pretend like I only know English… and as long as they speak English I can actually understand their answers!!! 😂
Our languages are similar but very different at the same time…..

Keep going it will happen! I went to study in Switzerland (and still live there) … and remember vividly suddenly one day having a long conversation with someone in German and actually being able to follow it … rather than just nod, smile and hope!

I've been living in Germany for 11 years now, and I still struggle with the language. I remember the first two years. Not understanding the people around you can be incredibly isolating, and I felt more like a cornered beast than like a person. It does get better though, so have faith in yourself and stick it out. You've got this!

Happened to me once in Mexico as a teenager I was in a museum reading everything in Spanish, very slowly. Then I came across one that I zoomed through….I was like wow! I am getting so much better, then realized what I was reading was English 🤦🏽‍♀️………😂😂

I know the feeling. 😊 It's hard to be an expat first. But suddenly its so naturally to have all kind of conversations in this new language. I cheer for you! 🤩
