2:42 Fry: Bender, what is it?
Bender: Whoa, what an awful dream. Ones and zeros everywhere. And I thought I saw a two.
Fry: It was just a dream, Bender. There's no such thing as two.

I would be happy to know about the origin of the names of programming languages.

The prefixes kilo-, mega- etc. are often misused when referring to data size. They are supposed to be powers of ten, so 1kB=1000 bytes, 1MB=1000kB etc. However at one point people started using the multiplier of 1024 because it is a round number in binary (2^10). The prefixes based on 1024 have separate names: 1 kibibyte (kiB) = 1024 bytes, 1 mebibyte (MiB) = 1024 kiB etc.
Some software displays hard disk sizes using the wrong convention, so when you buy a new hard drive your OS might tell you that it has less space than what's written on the label, only because one is in GB and the other is in GiB.

Jpeg stands for “janky, poorly encoded graphic”

GIF for me is "giff" because:
1. that's the only kind of sound a "G" makes in my first language.
2. the "G" stands for "Graphics" which isn't pronounced "juraffics".

The earliest computers had 4-7 bits grouped together as bytes, memory was too expensive for more. So, no, "byte" is not an acronym. "XL" is a shorthand for "Excel" meaning "out of (each) cell" and a play on "excellence".
Also, JPEG is common, not popular. We are forced to use it by manufacturers, not by choice.

I pronounce GIF differently from basically everyone else. I pronounce every letter, like G-I-F, just like how you pronounce P-D-F.

You make me feel old. I remember the punchcards. My dad was a programmer starting back in the '60's. I have memories of him taking my sister and I work and seeing a huge computer punch card and tape machines. He would bring home old punch cards for us to color on or to use to scrap paper.

Patrick. I used to pronounce GIF as jiff until I discovered that there is a picture format called Jeff's Image Format, which pretty much decided it for me.
