I deal with freight every day! Here are my tips to drivers.

1- Be on time. Don't take loads if you can't make the timeline.

2-Be affordable. Example box trucks here range $360-1, 200 per load 1 way. The guys that are reliable charging us $550 and under get the loads...

3- Have the correct straps, load bars, etc for the job. Compression straps do not hold cargo properly on many loads... Get ratchet straps.

4- Upkeep your truck. Are the rails in good shape, are your floors swept, does your truck have holes and it gets cargo wet when it rains or snows?

5-Shower, know the language of the country you work, be able to communicate to the customer when they call.

6- Keep a cool head and know where you are picking up from and where the load is going. It is astounding how many drivers dont know their route, the job number, etc. Know some of the details before going into the company talking to the foreman or shop manager. Don't just say Im here to pick up and shove a phone in the persons face. If you have a BOL tell the person and offer to email it to them for them to print.

For anyone thinking you have to work with brokers its not the case... Dont be scared to get on the phone and call customers and work with them directly.. Especially if you're locally customers appreciate having someone local they can rely on. Also you're cutting out the brokers cut.. If you can do quarterly mini bids with customers directly you're gonna be in good shape.. This is coming from a broker of 7 years. If you're gonna get a box truck get a 26ft W liftgate.. Cummins engine / Allison Transmission.

Get you a DOT number which is free. Pay for your MC number and pay for insurance. Book your own loads and go to the top.

A truck driving job can earn you a good living. There’s also lots of jobs out there in the industry, that aren’t worth having, I’ll give you that.
But, if you really want to make it as a trucker, whether company driver or owner operator, YOU NEED TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.
I bought my first trucking after receiving $215k from Federal Grant for Trucking and Transportation business startup program in 2015.
Today been an owner operator after taxes, fuel and licensing I profit $190, 000 in the bank. My advice; Get your own authority and work open broker boards for trips. A good starting place as an o/o is to pull a reefer. Try to stay away from dry freight. There are too many green o/o’s in dry freight, and too many coming and going. The competition is fierce, so it is difficult to get high paying loads. Reefers pay more money. If you have some flatbed experience, you will get even better loads and better miles. I've been in the transportation field for a few decades. This video would be very helpful to anyone wanting to start a box truck company. Don't expect to be cashing fat checks that put you in the black, right off. It takes times and there's a huge learning curve. I feel the most important thing after the equipment, permits and insurance is satisfied, is to get at least 1 person who knows the industry. They will be very valuable to you. There's money to be made as long as your employees are able to take care of the truck and customers. Which is very hard to find.
