Direct ab work like sit-ups, and leg raises is great, but do you really need or not need it?

It all depends on your goals and why you may practice it. So no you may not need it, but you probably do want it as it can make it easier to develop your abdominals.

matt, i've come to really appreciate the knowledge you share with us. you're an outstanding and articulate speaker. besides becoming a subscriber to your channel, i ordered a copy of your overcoming isometrics book, and i'm looking forward to implementing isometrics into my training. i have a small youtube channel myself, under my name. 69 years old and still training daily.

The thing i hate most in fitness is the line "abs are built in the kitchen, you dont need to train abs". Yeh i also have biceps, doesnt mean i dont need to work them to make them look bigger

As a martial artist, I've found that elbow lever is an essential exercise on my part for Kyokushin. Trains the abs, but also hardens them against impact

As usual, I agree with everything you said. -I find that pullups work my abs.

Leg raises are good b/c they strengthen the hip flexors, which are often neglected.

It's weird, the only thing that makes my abs sore is hollow-body close grip chin ups. Nothing else does it for some reason.
