Same in The Netherlands for many festivals and outdoor events and shared terraces in general. In Belgium when you order a Kwak (special beer) in its special glass they will want one of your shoes as a deposit.

As a person that travels to Germany as a tourist several times a year I love this system. Many of these glasses are collectable items. Especially the ones in special biergartens or Christmas markets. By paying a deposit you can choose to take the glass with you for your collection. Drawback of course is that you end up with a lot of glasses back home :)

Germany has a low wastage culture, quite opposite to USA.
Have a bunch of Euros handy. Need them in restrooms, coffee shops, bars, everywhere

Only? Nah, Tivoli in Copenhagen has used a similiar system for many years. Many smaller festivals in Denmark also have a system like this.

Bad system. They speculate for additional money because you would cancel the “deposit” due to enormous waiting times in the usual queue. And if dont find your "chip", they dont take the glas. Its a scam.
