Note: you can freeze diced onions. Yes. no more dried onions.

I recently found the better than bouillon and after doing the math and tasting it I am a total convert. It has better flavor than box broth and it’s way cheaper. Add to that you can store that jar in your refrigerator for over a year so you always have broth on hand without having to remember to pick it up at the store.

All fantastic tips and swap ideas, Julia! I already do most of them, except the homemade cream of chicken soup, so Thank you 😋 I'm 64, so you're never too old to make healthier food swaps (and I feel better)!

I've also started making Ranch Dip powder from scratch (hubby likes veggies in Ranch dip). The only ingredient that I didn't have in my pantry/frig was the buttermilk powder. Now I don't have half envelopes of Ranch dip powder in the pantry because I only need enough for 8 oz of sour cream at a time.

Fun fact… the grocery store beef is delivered vacuum packed with a shelf life of 60 days in a proper cooler. That same meat is also aged around 30 days, sometimes more before being vacuum packed and sent to the stores. The aging increases flavor. Nobody really enjoys beef that is fresh, and that’s because really fresh beef is tough.

Such great tips. It's also very easy to make a gravy if you don't have pan drippings, for example when you are eating leftovers. I just make a roux (equal parts butter and flour), then add chicken or beef broth (using Better Than Bullion). It's not quite as good as gravy made from pan drippings, but a nice option if needed.

I totally agree with your choices and reasons, but I make my own chicken stock in the instant pot and freeze them in 1 & 2 cup containers. Better than bullion is good on a pinch but homemade as you said is 1 million times better!

I give you credit for your humbleness, with these videos. You're very gracious when explaining why you don't by something. 👍👍

I've been making my own taco seasoning for years. Don't like all the added things and I can adjust the sodium to my liking. Thanks for the cream of chicken and mushroom ideas. I don't like all the sodium and processed ingredients in those cans.

In stead of canned beans buy dry beans and cook your own. You can use a small pot and just make a cup or 1/2 cup at a time. They will double in size so 1/2 cup dry beans will yield about a can of beans. No sodium no additives

Great info. Any chance you could post those idea in a text format? That was so much info over such a short period of time it would be GREAT to be able to print it out and save it for reference. If you can, thank you.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that the meats from wallmart or target look fine in the package if you haven’t cooked them for a couple of days….but if you try that with meats that are cut up in the store they tend to darken.
Makes you wonder what they did to the meats so they still look fresh?
