And Microsoft want to enable Bitlocker by default? Madness!

When you don't vet your updates and expect the users to be beta testers this is what happens. Microsoft needs to be sued!

Never underestimate MS ability to drive people away from Windows and to Linux.

To get your bitlocker key BEFORE something happens and you run a local account, start a command prompt in Admin mode and execute:
"manage-bde -protectors -get <drive_letter>"
Replace "<drive_letter>" with the actual drive you want to get the key for, usually C:, but once for each drive that's encrypted.
Then print that data on paper and/or store it on a USB stick that you put a literal padlock on.
If you print it, make sure you use a good font that ensures that "l" and "1" looks different as well as "0" and "O".

I don't understand how a PC sitting in someone's basement would need to be encrypted by default, maybe a laptop being carried all around the country with sensitive information on it, it should be opt in not opt out. Seems it may just be justification for Microsoft to then push the OneDrive to backup the system to the cloud so they can more easily rummage through you're data.

Sounds like a 'deliberate' bug to encourage people to open a microsoft account. Microsoft will say, " told you this would happen".

This update was SO annoying. These dumb OEM companies enable it from the factory and elderly people or non-tech-savvy people spend days contacting support trying to figure out why they need a super long code for a feature they never turned on in order to boot their PCs.

I wasn't affected by it since I don't use BitLocker but i had to fix about 10 computers.

The silly thing is, if you don't have a smartphone with internet, or another computer with online access, the "locked out" computer being your ONLY portal to the net, and that portal is shut, because it wants you to enter this code first.

anybody that has ever worked tech support will know exactly what kind of pain in the ass it is when a customer brings a computer locked down with bitlocker. You will ask them to sign into his/her microsoft account to get the keys, and they will almost certainly reply "what microsoft account?" What an absolute nightmare.

Every update that rolls is an update that messes something up 😒

Once upon a time updates used to fix bugs and fix security holes. Nowadays all updates seem to do is f**k things up.

And this is why we have been Microsoft free for the last 15 years.

They really are wrecking so many computers

Why are they doing this ?

I've paused my updates. Thank you for mentioning this, as Microsoft has enabled bitlocker on my device. I would have lost data if they automatically installed that. I'm turning off bitlocker as well.

I had no issues on both of my Windows 11 Pro PCs but checked BitLocker status on both anyway and it's switched off. All good. Thanks for the video!

It's to dangerous to let your pc update automatically these days. I've paused mine

I'm too scared to be enabling bitlocker. The risk of loosing your data is much higher with bitlocker than without it.

Thank you - this is so helpful - I didn't realize my computer was enabled and I had to basically jump through hoops to find it, but found it in my Microsoft account as you suggested, glad I found this and wrote it down right away stored in a file where I can access it later if needed.

No Brian first thanks for the warning as every day when I check for updates I always get a security update. Actually on checking I have this particular update installed on my laptop - something that does not happen on my main desktop when checking for updates on it - I shall have to delve into update history to see if it has downloaded without my knowledge. Now having said that I have often thought of encrypting my laptop it is my main machine to use, and the latter part of this video has been really helpful!!.

Just hope you can log in to your Microsoft Account on a device OTHER THAN the one you are trying to unlock!
