When it comes to the new breed of electric vehicles from mainstream car-makers, they don’t come any better than the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6.

And it’s no surprise these two Korean EV cousins have a lot in common, given both mid-size electric crossovers share the same e-GMP platform and, in entry-level form, similar single-motor rear-wheel drive powertrain specs.

But there are some key differences between these cutting-edge EVs when it comes to pricing, equipment, performance, comfort, dynamics and design.

Can the 2022 Kia EV6 Air outclass the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 2WD? Sam Charlwood investigates.

It's really surprising that no other EV brands offer a 350kW (or faster) DC fast charge capability that's standard on both Ioniq 5 & EV6. Not even the latest offerings from BMW, Lexus, MB, Polestar, Porsche, Volvo, and certain not from Tesla, can match Hyundai & Kia. Being able to charge 10%-80% in 18 mins (compared to 40-60mins on the others) is a gamechanger for me. IMO, a manufacturer releasing a new EV today that doesn't have at least a 350kW DC fast charge feature, is not forward thinking enough and is already outdated.

My apples to oranges sense is tingling. Claimed range for Kia of 528km is for the air model not the GT-line RWD shown which still boasts 504km. Price tag shown is also for Air model, GT-line rwd (After a price increase?) starts at AUD $79, 590 compared to the, renamed, Ioniq Dynamic's $69, 900. For $ to km of range the Kia is $157.90/km WLTP (Real world range = NFI) and the Hyundai is $145.32/km WLTP ($162.93/km real world range).

Great review.
By the time we can buy one of these, we'll have the Tesla car/plane and these will be like a horse and cart! 😆
