Muscle Car 5 Speed Conversion Tremec TKO Transmission Install 1969 Chevelle V8 Speed & Resto Shop

Overdrive transmissions provide many benefits to longevity and fuel consumption, and they are more fun to shift than automatics. In this series, the V8 Speed & Resto Shop crew installs a Tremec TKO 600 from Modern Driveline complete with a hydraulic throwout bearing assembly for easy action and a Superior clutch for positive grab behind the 454 Chevy V8 in our 1969 Chevelle. The Tremec TKO 5-speed manual transmission handles 600 pound-feet of torque and the Modern Driveline kit puts the shifter in the original position on our ‘69 Chevelle.

The V8 Speed and Resto Shop crew performed a complete restoration on this sweet 1969 Chevelle SS, and you can watch that Chevelle restoration video at the link below:

OUTSTANDING.I had the option of buying a very slightly used Dodge Challenger SRT with a manual 6 speed. My deceased stepson left it and owed very little. My left knee has permanent damage and 70 years of wear and tear so I passed on the deal. One of his children bought it from his estate. We loaned her the payoff amount. The car still rocks. And looks pretty as all get out.

I put a Doug Nash 5 speed in my 69 Chevelle back in the 1980's, still works great.

Chevelles Rule.
If you disagree, you're wrong.
The most appealing Muscle car of all.
I like other Muscle cars, but Chevelles, look and feel right.

That TKO 600 can handle lots of torque..!! Nice job guys..!! Remember to put insulation over that new transmission tunnel

might want to add a black front spoiler on this car. 60's cars had hundreds of pounds of lift on the hood at highway speeds and a spoiler really helps also pulls air down from the firewall area. huge difference in cooling and high speed stability. and the reason nearly every newer car has some kind of lower air dam.

Manuals are more fun than Auto. My mom wants a manual for her next Camaro.

Wow just wow. Your video here answered all my questions regarding rear differential gearing and 5 speed manual transmissions. At 60 miles per hour the car was about 1750 rpm's, that took so much strian off that engine and acheived the highest gas milage ! Fantastic job by your whole hotrod shop ! I'm saving this video on my desk top for continual rewatching until I'l as knoledgable as possible.

Cool conversion! I remember this great 69 at MCACN. Way more fun!

What a precise job. So far from the days of improvisations that led to the failure of one component or the other.

Best mod there is for old cars. Period. Today's manuals are fantastic. Plus overdrive gives those big engines a break.

I bought a Tko 600 around 2012. Back then the company was owned by Hurst. It's now American Powertrain. I was debating between buying a Richmond five speed, but the Richmond was more expensive. I wish I bought the Richmond. For starters the Richmond is made in the U.S. The tremec is made in Mexico. For mellow cruising with easy shifts it was fine, however, I bracket race, so I needed a trans that could handle high rpm shifting. I was missing a lot of third gear shifts and it was getting progressively worse. I contacted the company about it and even though it was a known issue from research I did they denied knowing about it and suggested I wasn't shifting correctly. I've been shifting manuals for thirty years. I had Libertys Gears do upgrades including faceplating, , and a better shifter, since then haven't missed a shift. However, that cost over 2k.

Manuals are okay but I'm auto guy! My th400 is setup to where I can manually shift it or it can shift it self. Best of both worlds 😆👍

If they would spend as much time showing a complete install as they do talking it would a great help for some.

took a pair borrowed from a hog to tear back into that beauty. cutting and grinding and welding oh my!!!....whew, and you guys had just finished it too...in the end, great job...i was thinking you might steer him to a clutch/automatic, but they were known for brutal upshifts, with no converter to cushion....just curious, did they ever get those bugs worked out of em?...

Tick performance has one person bleeder lines for the hydro clutch throwout bearing in the Tremecs, got one for my 04 GTO and it works great for bleeding or changing the clutch fluid while the trany is in the car. It's long enough to put up in the engine bay and you can bleed the clutch system without going under the car. The line has a speed bleeder and all you do is fill the clutch master and put a cup under the bleed valve and pump the clutch pedal, just keep the master full.
