What are the principles of international humanitarian law? | IHL | ICRC

International humanitarian law (IHL) sets out rules for once war happens. States set-up these rules to protect the civilian population from hostilities.

IHL is built on three principles: Distinction, Proportionality and Precautions. All of which need to be respected for an attack to be lawful.

From my observations, only the Americans and most NATO countries have honored IHL. Therefore, it is a sick joke. Proportionality is illogical and, in essence, means that wars will go on forever. That is exactly what we are seeing in Ukraine, Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon. It is what we saw in Iraq and Afghanistan. Tit for tat is a strategy for sustained suffering and chaos.
