Burnout may lead to significant doctor shortage, study projects

COVID-19 has exacerbated doctor burnout, but the problem existed long before the pandemic. The Association of American Medical Colleges reports burnout could cause a significant shortage of physicians by 2034. Dr. Tina Shah, a critical care physician and former senior adviser to the U.S. surgeon general, joined CBS News' Lana Zak to discuss.

Med schools are losing potential top talent to other industries that offer much better work life balance, great salaries, benefits etc. Why work 70 hours a week when you can be a software engineer or bioengineer working remotely and less than 40 hrs a week?

I as a resident during the Covid pandemic. It was a nightmare and I was so lonely. I had to quit because of. My own medical illness. I am doing better now and I am so grateful of the 40 wk week I have now. ❤🙏

Highly doubt it. They said the same with the pandemic and the rates of people getting into medical and dental school and nothing changed. People don’t realize that this is a long journey towards admission. No one wakes up one day and says “I’m gonna take the MCAT”. That doesn’t happen.

I wish if I went back and did school again I would major in business just business management and economics and premed. so I can do business as back up and have knowledge of business finance and stuff. I wish about also biomedical engineering with research as a great choice.
