It has been nearly two full years since the coronavirus pandemic began and our doctors are burned out. According to recent polls, nearly half of all physicians in the United States report feeling burned out, and about one in five have considered leaving medicine altogether. But is COVID solely to blame for this burnout epidemic, or is there more to the story?

Burnout can be defined as a state of emotional, mental, and physical stress caused by prolonged or repeated workplace stress. It is characterized by feelings of exhaustion, low productivity, and cynicism towards work.

Although COVID-19 has added another layer of stress onto our doctors, physician burnout has been an issue years in the making. We need to take a good hard look at the root causes of physician burnout and start making strides to improve them. Only then will we be able to achieve happier and healthier doctors.

I'll never forget the time I was forced to attend a 2 lecture/workshop on stress and was forced by an administrator to pull out my phone and look at baby animals with the group to increase my wellness.

I appreciate this video so much; however, I do think we need to discuss what we can do to make these changes and actually put them into action. Less talk, more doing. Not criticizing the creator, but the healthcare system as whole. Nothing is going to change until we actually do something.

AAMC: We have a physician shortage and burn out among students
Also the AAMC: Let's make the MCAT longer!!!

I'm a burned out physician and the main reason in my opinion is the lack in the number of physicians
I'm sure we can accept many many more spots in medicine and other healthcare careers
If there're enough healthcare workers, the pressure will be less and divided among all even if the expense is going to be lower salary no problem

i'm currently doing my intern year and i'll be leaving because of burnout. We should always put our own health first. Leaving doesn't mean defeat.

RN here, in NYC during the peak, went back to school and I'm feeling the loss of desire to continue. I saw physician colleagues, PAs, NPs, RRTs, and RNs morality injury and compassion fatigue be exacerbated by the pandemic. It's a shame

The U.S. should start lowering the absurd costs of medical education if it wants more people to enter the medical profession.

Like how rough waters tests a ship’s crew, the pandemic is the stress test that exposed all the problems in society we weren’t willing to address beforehand while sailings had been smooth

This video is awesome! I have been researching medical professional burnout for a project this semester, and you hit all the main points perfectly. Great video and I hope it spreads a lot of awareness on the issue!

burnout starts to accumulate all the way back in med school and its vital to find a way to blow off all that steam since then

Pay medical professionals (all) more and compensate better. Hospital admins should not be making 5x more while nurses are getting shafted. Fuck greed

You bring up great points about burnout and its causes. I reference that Medscape survey a lot when I give talks about personal finance. One thing that bothers me is that it forces doctors to answer the question categorically and doesn’t shed any light on what “administrative tasks” or “lack of autonomy” means. Even higher compensation can mean many things (higher pay, or more time off, different RVU structure, etc.). I always want to follow up with these doctors and ask more specifically what causes their burnout.

Thank you for this. It’s important for physicians to have some time to themselves in order to relax with friends/loved ones to vent out and be able to collect their thoughts so they return charged up and mentally stronger

I can only empathize with medical workers, and I wish there was a way I could support ya directly. Highly appreciate you always.

You should really do a video about the medical draft and what it means for healthcare workers/ future healthcare workers. I am currently a health care provider and had absolutely no idea about this topic until recently.. Out of all the schooling I went thru they never once mention it and I think it is a worthwhile topic that needs to be covered ESPECIALLY in the current state of the world..

If insurance companies weren't such hogs and actually paid properly for the work doctors do, then I bet you doctors wouldn't mind the extra work. Compensate them for their work and everyone is happy.

Why is it that Urology ranks among the specialties with the highest burnout rates? I don‘t see why it would ne more stressful than general surgery, vascular surgery, etc.

I've said this on reddit and got lambasted i.e Its a little disingenuous of news sites to post an article that physician burnout is purely because of the pandemic.
