I think you missed the point of the "nuclear suitcase" argument. People make this point to show that we can have reasonable limits on the right to bear arms, not that people would try to use nukes in a home defense scenario because as you said, that's ridiculous.

Think about it this way; some people want gun control, others don't. Those who don't want gun control often cite the 2nd amendment as a defense. The 2nd amendment says citizens have the right to bear arms, and that this right shall not be infringed. Well, obviously we've since put some restrictions on that due to the fact that people can't own things like tanks, automatic weapons, nuclear weapons, etc. These are all things that didn't exist at the time the 2nd amendment was written, so we've had to place reasonable limits on the right to bear arms as technology advances. We've already been able to place limits on the 2nd amendment, essentially, is the point of the "nuclear suitcase" argument.

People make this point to illustrate that we've always been able to adapt the 2nd amendment to reflect our current society and that maybe we should continue to.
