Love hearing ‘Her’s’ playing in the background

I’m a cabinetmaker and I work in a cabinet shop, as cabinetmakers tend to do. I spend a lot of time measuring, planning, measuring, executing and overly perfecting my work. There are some framers turned cabinetmakers in my shop and it’s like they have hams for fists and build cabinets like they framed houses - quick and dirty. It’s hard to watch.

But, watching a framer frame houses is cathartic.

Level a piece of siding on the gable, lay another piece of siding on the roof up against your leveled piece of siding and draw a line. Perfect every time.

Made one of those out of 2 old drywall squares 30 years ago, guess I should have patented it. Best way to mark long cuts on lap siding, quick and fast, framing square and stair guages never long enough

Neat tool. Math is the stepping stone to bigger and better things in life. It's also the way you check things and not get screwed. BTW, I had Calculus, Differential Equations, and Statistics in college and hated it. Now in retirement looking back, they were incredibly important in engineering. Couldn't do the jobs w/o it.

Starret used to make a big "protractor" . Never owned one but was envious of 2 that did.

Love that tool it makes the first cut perfect the rest fall in place

In the old days, we just used a level and tape rule to find the pitch. Then a square was used for the cut

You could also just run a piece of siding with a square end in to the roof then measure from the top end and take that off the bottom. Or you should know what pitch the roof is and how to use a speed square in which case a long angle will fit perfect! People always just throw away the booklets that come with a speed square. With out reading them, or even looking them over to see that there are 60 pages of useful stuff!

"That looks level right?" When it's a mile off still makes me giggle after 10 years in construction

Cool tool. But again not enough info. Like what the tool is called, where do you find them to purchase and what other things it can be used for. Just saying

Just need a sqaure and the pitch. It’ll be a “long 6” if the pitch is “6”. Put the sqaure on the siding mark common 6 and your line and that’s it! If it’s horizontal instead of vertical, put your sqaure on the swivel and bring it up until the side of the board hits common 6. For the people saying it can’t touch the roof for water, this is the zip system, it won’t get through either way. I think!

you can do the same thing with two small scraps of plywood. You can also trace for formwork to mate with the Earth by flushing up plywood and scribing with a length of whatever, cut that out, fits perfectly to the Earth
