you need like 2 diamond stones to sharpen a sword to decent cutting power, and if you maintain it it's like 5 minutes a day.
though I think a halberd like weapon would be better
a man catcher might be great for single zombies actually.

crowbars don't have a real grip as well as being heavy and awkward to swing, but the utility argument is compelling

Thing about sword maintenance - actually you more need oiling of the blade, than sharpening in. In reality combat blades there pretty dull, way duller than, say, modern kitchen knife (far from being a metal slab, but). In sword combat you cant afford excessive sharpness, since otherwise parrying will wear off blade (which btw often were not whole way through made of decent steel).

In reality though man when you swing that crow bar with all your might. Most of your body is going with it causing a very slow very obvious swing they can see and move out of the way and or recounter attack from the side thats now exposed due to the inertia of-that swing
