Manage Your Stress with Movement Expert (Gray Cook)

A lot of us use exercise to dump stress, and that’s great. But according to Gray Cook, if you’re doing it wrong, you may not be getting the results you want.

Begin with AWARENESS. Are you overstressed or under-recovered? These are both imbalances, but very different problems. Wearables can help here, but only to augment and instruct your own awareness. Learn from them, but don’t rely on them.

Take what you just learned and PROTECT yourself. We are always more motivated to add something new, whether it be activity, exercise or supplement. But what can you remove to foster recovery and improve the situation? Correctives won’t work if you don’t protect yourself.

Now, it’s time to CORRECT. Contain the problem, find the right path, and set the right pace. The FMS, YBT and SFMA can guide you to the right path of self-limiting exercise.

Balance or core stability issues might point you at a Motor Control Path

Deep squat or lunge issues may direct you to a more Functional Path.

As for pace, there’s fertile ground between “too much” and “not enough.” What helps here is remembering that moving well always comes before moving often. You can also explore the heart rate regulation ideas of Wim Hof and Phil Maffetone.
