Tesla’s Robotaxi Competitors

Waymo has launched curbside pickups and drop-offs at Phoenix airport, and BYD has partnered with Huawei for advanced autonomous driving tech, following last week’s Uber partnership. Waymo is now at 100,000 autonomous rides per week, while Baidu is at 75,000. However, Tesla investors are more focused on autonomous miles, with Tesla driving 70 times more miles than Waymo or Baidu. We’ll also show you videos of Waymo’s teleoperation and compare Tesla’s Full Self-Driving on HW3 vs. HW4 cars.

It’s more blackberry versus iPhone. The blackberry had a keyboard and was popular, but the iPhone was extremely flexible. FSD by Tesla is flexible and general purpose. It’s a product you can also purchase with your car.

This partnership sounds like the Uber death rattle

I am full in on TESLA. Not Elon politicking. But TESLA mission.
I took 5 WAYMO trips in San Fran.
Mindblowingly good. Much better than 12.3.6 (I’m patiently waiting)

I thought this was an excellent follow up or precursor to the room that you had hosted regarding automated driving the Highlander😊

No first mover or last mover, but disrupter advantage….

So the story at the beginning, Waymo doing a partnership with Uber, was not true

Tesla not only have an uncatchable data advantage, they also have a huge lead in compute power to train the neural nets. On top of that is the financial advantage of being able to build FSD cars at a fraction of the cost of their competitors.

The 'competition' don't have Tesla's data, execution, or ability to scale. Scale is everything. Tesla will out-manufacture everyone else.

Robotaxi business is very rate-sensitive and will likely not inspire brand loyalty. There is no investment in the service like Facebook. So ultimately the service that provides reasonable comfort at the lowest cost will dominate. Comfort, convenience, and perceived safety will be very important however. One advantage of Tesla is a variety of vehicle types with FSD, providing higher/lower levels of luxury. Not everyone eats Little Ceaser's Pizza or McDonald's hamburgers even though they are cheapest.

thanks for the analogy and and clarifications hans and herbert …

yes first might seem “better” … but an apple and a grove of oranges is not comparable.

That waymo wasn’t even in an edge case, it was in a damn parking lot and couldn’t figure out how simply to make a right turn and get out of it

I would like Tesla to allow car owners to become part of the robotaxi. So that while you don't need a car and you are resting, the car could earns money for you. All that remains is to develop an application for robotaxi and finally have a full-fledged FSD for this purpose.

This race is not about being first. It’s all an out getting it right. Right tech. Right vehicle/s. Right service, also once in the vehicle, and pricing. Still think TSLA will beat anything out there, now or in the next 5+ years. When is it ready? That’s anyone’s guess, but whenever it happens it won’t be “too late” anyway.

As $TSLA investors see other company's driverless cars picking up and dropping off happy paying customers by the millions, they just need to keep the faith and remind themselves that "Tesla is so far ahead, they have no competition".

China does not need to "copy" anyone. They are extremely dedicated with razor sharp focus, and very hard working. They put out 4.7 million STEM graduates each year, compared to some 500K in the US, and most of the STEM folks in the US are foreign students! And the Chinese are already starting to market the sale of robots that can be used for work around the home, putting them way ahead of Tesla.

The Tesla robotaxi does not exist. I wonder how the heck something that does not exist can have competition….

Didn't all you Youtubers had been saying the past 2 years that Tesla will have no robotaxi competition ?

Herbert, it seems obvious to me that in order for Tesla to prove to regulators that the Tesla Robotaxi is 3x, 5x, 10x, 20x safer/better than human drivers, they will have to launch the Robotaxi service in pilot launches with remote monitoring. This will allow Tesla to accumulate data from millions of unsupervised miles. Tesla will also accumulate data from Tesla customers driving nationwide wide in an unsupervised mode by turning off the eyeball attention nags and allow the person in the driver’s seat to sleep, watch movies, read, or use their smartphones. I don’t think regulators will allow customers to vacate the driver’s seat until enough data has been collected to determine the safety level to allow the removal of the driver.
