We finally learned the identity of the red angel on this week's Star Trek Discovery! But was it disappointing or did a season's worth of buildup finally pay off? Let's dive into it with my latest review.

No mention of the awkward arrival of Airiam's bridge replacement? That was a great little scene! Especially considering who the actress is. 😋

I kind of thought she was lying. Like she sensed some tension between them and she wanted Culber to claim him, which he did. It is that scene that prompts him to talk Cornwall, then try to reach out to Paul. But then that would be making georgiou too nice.

I completely lost it when the emperor called Culber papi. I'm glad there was a 24 hour gym in the mycelial plane for culber to pass the time.

Doug Jones just tweeted it was him singing. He said "Yes, that really was me singing in tonight's
@startrekcbs
episode. I was terrified when I saw the script, especially because it was in the Kelpien language (which is new to all of us!!). I used to be the soloist at my church, so I dug deep for the courage. #StarTrekDiscovery".

I gotta say...I was not sure how to feel about the series during season one...but now, I am hooked. I am in. I am beginning to trust where they are taking the show...I have hope.

22:11 - "There is only so many mutinies you can allow..."

Commander William "Bill" Adama of the Battlestar Galactica has left the chat.

Dunno if you noticed in the scene where Leland died, he had to repeat his security commands and after he said them, the computer (control) then repeated them using his voice. Also, during the funeral scene, they showed a shot of the autopilot system with 3 red dots. In other words, the future AI Control had copied itself into discovery's autopilot/nav computer, then transferred itself to Leland's ship, then tricked him into giving it security clearance, then killed him. So now it can impersonate him at least on viewscreens, and no one knows the AI is still there.

Technological leaps because of time travel: Voyager was actually the first thing I thought of, the one where they go back to 1996 and the Doctor gets the mobile emitter. They even said in that episode that the technological boom of the 90s wasn't supposed to happen

@ 14:30 I wonder if that's them explaining why Discovery looks different from TOS. Section 31 admitting that the timeline has been changed because of star trek's rampant abuse of time travel.

An interesting and generally solid episode, but a mixed bag is fair! Some good stuff mixed with meh stuff, but not too bad overall. I had a similar reaction when they said the RA was MB, but didn't expect the reveal to be her mom. I liked the scene where they 'captured' the red angel in terms of visuals. I think a lot of my gripes stem from what haters of the show would say about it. But as more time with this show goes on, I really don't give two shits about haters say I guess. (even if some gripes they have are valid)

I'm with you here - the "time crystal" felt like a macguffin. I love Burnham and Disco, I'm not on the "ugh Mary Sue" train, but when this unfolded I felt the wave of those people swelling up behind me. I really hope they develop this well enough to stand on its own. The acting here was superb, I don't want it wasted.

If you've ever read a reasonably long novel, there are chapters that exist to move the dominoes into place but may not have lots of other story. It's a fact of life within serialized storytelling, every individual episode doesn't exist as an individual unit, it's part of the whole. Yes, I have seen people suggest it would be Burnham's mom, but they were mostly joking. As a result it makes sense considering Leland's reveal about how and why her parents died.

I think it's still possible that some or all of the other instances of us seeing the Red Angel were actually Burnham. Or at least the one Spock mind melded with was. There's nothing about the suit that we know so far that necessitates that the Red Angel is always the same person.

I think the technological leap they were talking about was from Voyager's episode "Future's End" where Janeway and Chakotay discover the computer revolution of the 20th century came about because of pieces of a crashed time ship from the 29th century. They couldn't undo it because it was already part of our history (though I think you could say that about any time travel alteration but you do what works for the story!)

4:52 I didn't mind the red angel reveal because they heavily telegraph she used the suit to escape the Klingon attack 20 years ago

9:50 they did briefly cut to Saru toward the end of the song around the time they launch Airiam's body into space...talking about season 1 deaths, this scene had made me thought of Landry's funeral. I mean can you picture Lorca saying a few words XD

19:10 Yea the back to back confrontation on Leland seem redundant through they served different purposes. Saru was sizing Leland up to determine if he could trust the section 31 captain while Burnham needed information...might have work better if they were space out more.

22:42 What I like about the Spock and Burnham gym scene is that Spock admitted he change his mindset the moment he saw how broken she was. It shows that while he does know all the ways to push Burnham's buttons...he doesn't actually want to see her suffer.

Hey Jessie! I just became your first patron! I’m so 100 percent with you where it felt sorta weird. Also your jacket collection is on point.
Edit:
Also, at first i was like “who the fuck are you?!” When she popped out of the suit. I hadn’t even thought about her mom being there. It looks like that her and Michael don’t get along well after all this time and doesn’t agree with her time traveling. I’m hoping this goes well. I’m not sure if it’s going to pick up. I liked how many silent moments were there. I just have a lot of feelings.

Honestly, the first ep in the series that I didn’t care for...excluding the end, which I thought was cool. Love your reviews!!!

I always love watching Michael and Spock talk. The thing I love the most about their conversations is at their heart they are typical sibling conversations (given the context) but the language Spock uses is very in character, so the actual discussions have this sort of hybrid quality of both formal debates and raw, emotional fights.

The real question I have to ask you... where'd you get that sweet Enterprise NX-01 jumpsuit hoodie? I really want one now that I know it exists. And I don't even wear hoodies.
