Why Nobody Wants to Move to New York Anymore.

New York State is shrinking in population. There are many reasons for this, not just real estate prices and crime rates. As a matter of fact, the crime isn't that bad in New York State or New York City.
The State of New York has many challenges, and in recent years those challenges have become to much for most people.

I lived in upstate New York for 3yrs and it’s crazy how different the rest of the state is from NYC. An hour north of Syracuse is mainly dairy farms and hunting.

You forgot to mention that New York City residents pay city income tax in addition to state and federal tax!

As a native NYer who moved out, I can't imagine going back. It sucks there.

As someone who worked at a travel call center, the average person's knowledge of geography is pathetic.

As a 20-yr resident of NYC I can tell you the number one complaint is the housing cost. I was forced out of my 2nd apartment and my rent, in a smaller, bad location apartment was 1/3 higher. The apartment I was forced out of was $1100/mo, but after I moved out, it became $3, 000/month. Cost of living is the number 2 problem. Given the weight of both of those, taxes doesn't even show up on the radar. It's housing costs and cost-of-living. Period. (Crime doesn't really scare most New Yorkers. It's just accepted. People walk around with $100 stickup money.)

Lifelong New Yorker here in Brooklyn. I just retired and because of the high rents I'm forced to leave the city. If I could stay I would. It's sad.

I've lived in Upstate New York all of my life. People from out of state don't just think of NYC as a separate entity, we do too, lol!! Seriously though, you talked about some people seeing our weather negatively- yes, our winter's are harsh, but 3/4 of our year here is gorgeous!! Spring, summer, and fall are perfect, and our state is packed full of gorgeous woods, lakes, mountains and fields. We definitely have our negatives, but lots to love about living here too!!

Me being raised in NYC all my life and just 2 years ago moved to AZ made me realize so much I was missing out on and how much the struggle was just to make ends meet back at home. At the same time I’m grateful for being from NYC because it’s the only place that shows u what true hustle means and you carry that with you for life.

As a native NYer. It’s kinda hard, NYC is just too expensive & upstate/ WNY don’t have good paying jobs. I will admit, if I could afford NYC I wouldn’t have left.

Ny
-Horrible weather all through the year
-Daily large amounts of senseless violence
-No self defense laws
-Dirty n polluted environment n atmosphere
-No genuine love or support
-Nowhere is safe, your head always gotta be on a swivel even on the train unless u wanna get robbed.
-Expensive asf apt/houses etc
-Busy asf at all times n everybody in a rush n got no manners.
-Overly Aggressive ppl for no reason both women n men. Most of the women are basically men(super masculine n gangsta asf)
-It’s just a big ball of negative energy n toxicity.
I’m tryna move out!!

As someone from NYC, there is a major difference in NYC and immediate surrounding area (Long Island, Yonkers, Mount Vernon) and the rest of the state. So much in fact that when a person says they're from New York, a person from NYC will make them clarify if its the city or the state.

I have lived in Upstate NY for 95% of my life. New York virtually is two states. Westchester county and south versus upstate. The only thing that keeps me here is how beautiful the Adirondack State Park is. I am retired and thinking of moving. Companies in the capital district are struggling to find employees, especially skilled workers, Such as HVAC, plumbing and electrical. Even car repair centers are finding it difficult to get techs. People are getting tired of the Vampire State and all the professional politicians, and leaving.

Surprised no one mentioned how badly NYC smells in the summer.

Whenever you mention New York, people automatically think of a huge busy, crowded expensive city.

Its so interesting to consider just how different Upstate New York is when compared to NYC. It really is two completely different worlds in terms of cultures, buildings, and the people.

True story on healthcare. I had a root canal done right before I moved back to Minnesota. It cost 3K. I got home and my sister needed a root canal. She paid 1K

I was born and raised for twenty one years In NYC . I grew up seeing a lot of violent things kids should not see, I witnessed puddles of bloods from shootings on the sidewalks in my neighborhood. All I can say is don’t move here it’s not worth it, it’s dangerous as hell and it’s hard to get by with how expensive it is to live here and you can’t walk anywhere in the city without the fear of getting slashed, stabbed, shot and mugged in every street corner in broad daylight and getting pushed on the train tracks on the subway . There was many times I experienced delays on the trains because someone got pushed on the tracks.

I spent a lot of time in NY City in 1999 and 2000. Everyone talked about the diversity and how everyone was accepted.
While I was installing a computer systems at an Old Navy "One Below" store I saw a woman stealing shoving clothes into a large bag/purse.
I told a manager that was near me, the manager asked me for a description, I started by describing what she was wearing, the manager asked was she black? I said yes, then she asked "did she have good or bad skin?" I thought that was an odd question and said "well, I didn't notice any acne or anything" the manager said quick and with a little anger "Cut the California correctness crap, I would like to catch her!", (at the time I lived in California) I apologized and let her know I didn't understand the question, she snapped "DID SHE HAVE LIGHT OR DARK SKIN!?!" I said "Oh, dark" she jumped on the store walkie talkie and put out the information for everyone to find her with the description.
When she was off the radio, I asked "so just so I know for the future, dark skin, is that good skin or bad?" She, the manager said "You aren't being serious, are you?" I let her know I had never heard of the shade of black skin being seen as good or bad. She just smiled and said "I love that you're so naive, dark skin is bad, light is good, the lighter the better."

I have always looked back on that and thought how weird it is that anyone would think that, especially since the manager was a black woman... With "good" skin.
