Imagine living your whole life in a country where the average temperature was 36C and went as high as 43C...and then the sudden whiplash I got when I realized Germany can have really hot summers and my room feels like boiler room.

I got a table fan, not a fancy one like you guys, but it gets the job done. Also I grew up next to construction sites so loud noises are like my background noise 😅

My company in the Munich area banned air conditioning after German colleagues said it made them sick so the office now usrs a water pipe cooling system.😅

I had a similar issue in Australian Summer with the Oven. I found that switching to an Air Fryer helped, which is basically an oven just horrible name. Since its so small I was able to move it to a different room for the cooking in summer, definitely will work outside as long as there is power.

My no 1 hack is keep the sun OUT, cover all windows. Draw all curtains. I use towels on my windows that have no blinds. The towel was actually bleached when I took it down ! It had been bleached by the sun !

Get a fan, the circulation will help you "feel" cool even if it isn't actually cool. The harder it blows, the better, quantity over quality. ☺

Eat foods that won't raise your body temperature. Foods that require a lot of digestion (depending on your unique metabolism) will make you feel warmer. That's why thick, rich foods feel so good in the winter.

I started sleeping on one of my towels. On hot days I spread it on the sheets where my body is going to be, and lie on it. For some reason, it feels more comfortable than the sheets, maybe because of the thickness and the high cotton content, and, if you sweat, the towel will absorb it. Better than waking up on wet sheets.

Reduce stress, the fight or flight response will make your body warmer ( making "your blood boil" ). Avoid disagreements. Stay calm.

Sleep. It will help keep you calm when you're awake and keep your body temperature regular.

I just moved to Northern Germany and I underestimated how hot it gets here sometimes. Currently sitting in front of my newly bought desk fan watching this video 🥵🥵

Up north it's quite fresh 31 degrees is the highest I've got, bought a regular tower fan with a smart plug and voila

I'm Australian, I live in Stuttgart and live on the upper level of an apartment. I get direct sunlight into my home.

I'm used to hot weather but the heat in Stuttgart is horrible. At night, I sleep with all the windows open.

I have no fan or aircon.

That's why I would import mine from the United States and now they're making them dual-voltage so they can handle European 220 v at 50 hertz or the United States 110 v at 60 hertz

Another hack for indoors is wet your clothes (works best with t shirts), and it will slowly dry on your body and cool you the whole time

I was in Thailand one month ago, and I learnt some ways of staying cool there.
1. They have a cool spay which you can spay onto your clothes, this will make you feel cool every time your skin touches the cloth.
2. Bring a inhaler with you, there is mint and some other herbs inside, inhaling though the filter will make you feel cool from inside and makes your mind clearer.
3. Cooling powder, this is also something popular in my homeland(China), we put some cooling powder on every corner of our body after a hot shower. (we also have some liquid with similar functions)
4. Buy a portable fan and bring with you when going outside.

As an American an air con is the one thing I will be asking my German partner for :)

I bought a Deckenventilator at Bauhaus for € 500, definitely worth it, has 5 speeds and keeps my apt at 25 C during the day, money well spent

Also consider a summer hat!
Not only does it make you look really stylish and stand out in a great way, it also protects your hat from most of the sun.
Just be sure to make it fit well, if it's too tight it may end up making you sweat more at the point where your hat touches your head.

In Hamburg we don't care about summer because you can expect rain in 1-2 regular business days 😂 and the temperature drops.

One thing I don’t see in Germany are ceiling fans in the apartments. Just curious why not? You can use them in winter and summer by switching the fan direction and keep the air flowing in the high ceilings. They push hot air downwards in winter and warm air up in summer. I swear by them as we don’t have a/c and it gets above 40 Celsius most years here. Also, I carry a small bottle of Avene mineral water to mist my face when I get too hot. Also, put a marble face roller in the freezer and it will cool your face quickly.
