What's going on in our brains when we laugh?

What I'm fascinated by is how uncontrollable a laugh can be.

The average person laughs 14 times a day!? WHAT! I must have a really mundane life then, I laugh MAYBE 1-2 times a day... maybe. I smirk quite a bit though, so that may be what they are counting. Interesting, I never really thought about laughter from a psychological perspective before, it just never occurred to me.

So does your mood determine your likelihood of laughing at something comical? Or is it truly contagious and if u get one going it's an epidemic? Guess it probably depends on the overall atmosphere.
