Romanticism is a cultural and intellectual movement that emerged in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Europe, particularly in Germany, France, and England.

It was a reaction against the precepts of order, calm, and idealization of 18th-century Neoclassicism and the ideals of reason and materialism of the Enlightenment.

Romanticism began as a new appreciation of the Middle Ages, inspired by medieval romances filled with chivalric adventures, individual heroism, and the exotic and mysterious.

As such, it emphasized the natural, the emotional, the imaginative, the individual, the subjective, the transcendental, and the mysterious.

Romanticism celebrated the unique individual, valuing personal perspectives, passions, and inner struggles, and often challenged the social and political norms of the time.

It exalted emotions, arguing that feelings were also essential for human experience, and emphasized the imagination, prioritizing the artist's creativity over strict adherence to classical rules.

Romantic poets and artists had a deep appreciation of nature, viewing it as a powerful and mystical force. They also explored the darker side of human experience, delving into themes of the occult and the supernatural.
