The KJV says Being made (not becoming), so much better than the angels, 'as he hath' by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
1. Christ became a man and triumphed over sin. Angels had more power than mankind after the fall of Adam. However, when Jesus became a man (the second man, Adam being the first), he triumphed over sin, re-elevating (by his fulfillment of the law, death and resurrection), mankind back into their position prior to the fall. That is why according to Romans and Corinthians we have been 're-conciled' to God through Christ.
So we are a part of his 'inheritance' and by his finished work accomplished (as a human man), he obtained (as a man) a more excellent name than the angels, bringing the rest of mankind with him. That is why;
2. In Daniel Ch. 7 vs. 13 & 14, Daniel saw the vision of the 'Son of man' ascending up to God and inheriting dominion. It all goes back to God so loving the world (mankind), that he chose to take on our estate (flesh, humanity) and actually will remain as a glorified God-man (glorified body) throughout eternity as a demonstration of his unmatched love for and oneness with us.
He did not do this for the angels. Those who fell, remain lost.
Jesus was always greater than the Angels being the Son of God, but in becoming the Son of man, he has restored mankind to the reflection of his image we fell from, making us again, greater than the angels (through him).

What Pastor John is saying is that in the internal council of the Godhead the Father, the Son, and the Spirit commune with one another and laid out the plan of redemption. The Father says, "I will purpose their redemption." The Son says, "I will by My death procure their redemption." The Spirit says, "I will come and apply their redemption."

And here is the key to his answer:
Jesus therefore made Himself nothing, or as Philippians says, He stripped Himself of all privilege, yet He did not give up the attributes of deity and made Himself nothing NOT BY SUBTRACTION of His deity, but BY ADDITION TO HIS HUMANITY. Therefore the Lord of the world became a servant in the world, and He whose right it is to rule took obedience to serve as His life characteristic.

I always felt due to the importance the Jews place on Angels in the Old Testament, Hebrews in someway might be explaining to the Jew the new notion of a man as not just a Messiah who is not divine but Messiah God man which the Jewish religion rejects.
