For #3, my biggest pet peeve is when people say "we have always done it that way." If we do the same thing since the beginning of time, we wouldn't improve ever.

Funnily enough I have been part of the clique of a nepo boss who was also incompetent, I ended up using the fact he liked me to do exactly what you suggested and got on with it. Ended up being noticed and headhunted for a better position in a different company.

Over my working life I had everyone of these bosses. Number 5 was probabley the most common. In the Air Force we had a saying "A person is promoted to their level of incompetance". I witnessed the truth of that statement, in civilian as well as military life. It is something noone likes to admit about themselves as a result I saw many people end up drinking too much or on medication for stress and other medical problems.

I have a combination of bosses all in one. He is a combination of boss 2, 3, , 4 and 5. I submitted my resignation on monday and I have yet to hear from him. I've already been getting the cold shoulder from my other coworkers and its clear he already told everyone else before responding to me. Looking forward to moving to my next company where the environment is much better and more structured, efficient, and just all around better.

When it comes to type 3, there's always malicious compliance.

You described the different types of bosses wonderfully. In my last job, I had a direct superior, boss No. 2 (incompetent). Unfortunately, I behaved similarly as you suggested, but somehow it happened so smoothly that in the end I did my bosses job. When the direct boss himself resigned from his job, it was assumed that I would take over, but in such a case I would have had to work under boss no. 4.
I personally think that boss #4 was bipolar. His moods fluctuated so often that we had to learn his body language, when he was in a bad mood or not. In the end, I left the company because the constant tiptoeing caused too much stress.

I've also had all of these bosses (and more versions of bad bosses).

My Inflexible boss wanted to flex to another manager. I warned him not to, as the other manager was one of the boys club. My inflexible boss was adamant that was his decision. I told him that was his decision to make, but when it bit him in the butt I was reserving the right to say "neener neener". It blew up as expected. I helped him save his behind, and rallied the rest of the team to help.

He listened to me after that. Begrudgingly, but he listened.

Great content as always with genuinely useful practical advice here.

I think there's a couple of other common types too which could use some advice:

1. The micromanagers/time police. Often takes pleasure in exercising their authority.
2. The thrifters that overwork and underpay you. They expect sacrifices yet give nothing.

I’ve had the irate boss quite a few times the last one I had was screaming at me on the phone because I didn’t tick a box on the paperwork the day before a close relatives funeral

“Leave if you can”

I wish I could. I really wish I could.

Worked 25 years in the food industry. The irate boss is the worst in tehr food industry because more often than not they are fueled by a massive cocaine habit. So you're experiencing their cocaine highs and withdrawal lows. They become an unstable element that needs to be removed from the workplace while they get the proper help they need to overcome their addiction.

I have one of these bosses. Unfortunately, I am stuck here for another year and three months. I can hardly wait.

I’ve moved around to 10 different companies. Every boss has been bad. I started to question if it was me. After reflection, it’s not. For some reason narcissists end up in management positions.

There is a combination of numbers 2 and 3. They'll take forever to reach a decision (#2), but once they do, they'll cling to it as if their life (or at least their job) depends on it and won't budge (#3)

I work for a NYC lawyer at his country farm property and learned to express a couple of 'suggestions' and then while he procrastinated, I would just do the one that was the better option and pretend he had said to. He was very cheap and believe the whole world was just hanging by their phone waiting for him to want them to do something for him. he would never pay full price...

It's easier to ask for forgiveness than to get permission.

I would be interested in how you would explain this list in terms of bosses in retail.

My bosses are great, but my wife has experienced the job from hell after initially thinking she was great. Paid minimum wage, but told to work half an hour each day unpaid to clean up and told to basically be grateful. Works as a receptionist. But made sweep, clean windows etc... it's got thar bad she is being forced with no option but to leave.

I’ve been a school LunchLady for 30+ years.
One of the principals was an “Irate Boss”. He was ssoooo friendly, until…. Anybody makes one mistake* ….. cue physically looming over the person while shouting, personal attacks, threats.

Not fun.
