A few basic rules.
1. A hand to hand pass must go backwards.
2. You can only tackle someone with the ball.
3. A touchdown is called a try and you must put the ball down.
4. Try gives 5 points which if kicked through the posts adds another 2. The kick must be taken in line with where the try is scored.
5. A penalty kick gives 3 points.
6. A drop kick through the posts gives 3 points.
7. You can kick the ball forward.
There are many mores rules but that’s some basics.

As a born South African, The Springboks are my national team. Makes my heart happy seeing someone from outside SA react to the sport. Rugby is basically a part of South African culture here, regardless of if people played it or not. Its brutal but I think that is why we are so proud to watch our team thrive and all come together as country especially during things like the World Cup going on right now. The whole country kind of just come together as one to support our team, the sport is truly a part of South African culture. Much love brother, you have a loyal subscriber in me 💙

I'm a South African. Rugby is life. Our blood runs green and gold. We are feared and truly champions.

I am a South African that now lives in New Zealand, it's a religion in both countries. The rivalry between to the 2 nations goes back to 1921, one of the biggest rivalries in world rugby . Between the 2 countries they have won 6 of the 9 rugby world cups played to date, 3 each (SA did not play in the 1st one due to international sanctions because of Apartheid). I wouldn't call SA the most feared team in world rugby, but I would say that they are probably the most physical and look to use that to dominate their opponents. SA / NZ games are something special.

They don't call them Springbok's for nothing, you should check out the strength, agility, and the speed of a springbok and you'll understand why our team is like this. They also have 62 million supporters behind them, we all bleed green and gold when the Springbok play. A proud South African 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦!!

As a South African rugby is a tradition here and we love it! ❤
Yes! NZ have always been our biggest rivalry but we respect each other.

Love the comments from both South African and New Zealand rugby fans, you can easily tell that rugby still has so much respect in the game and from the fans. NZ has been the dominant force in world rugby for years and the Haka is something to behold! Love my Boks though, let's go Springboks 2023 World Champs again! 🤞🏽🤞🏽

As a South African rugby mum I can say this fireceness starts from school level rugby, its not a sport here its a religion, its our national unifier, hearing the war cries at school at the beginning of each game you know the teams dont come to play a game they come to declare and win a war! Our rugby culture is next level epic.... we are celebrating big time today having made history last night winning the Rugby WC 4 times! Go Bokke! U MAKE US SUPER PROUD!

Okay some basics of rugby:

Rugby is a 80 minute game with two 40 minute halves. There are 'forwards' and 'backline' players - forwards are 1 to 8 and backline is 9 to 15 jersey numbers. Each has a role, a purpose and part to play in the entire team depending on individual skills. Your forwards are generally heavy set guys, big muscle people who are like your 'support team' and your back line players are dynamic, agile and fast. They are your "attack team" also great defensive tacklers.

There is one ref, two linesman with flags and a TMO or television Match Official who can basically DVR the game, rewind it, check different angles and give the ref advice on things.

1) it's all about gaining ground - moving forward
2) you can only pass behind you or "flat" but never forward
3) Tackles cannot be above the shoulders, have to wrap both arms (no shoulder charging etc.) and once tackle is called or opposition player is down, the tackler has to release the player or get penalised.
4) when a tackle is made, and the tackler rolls away, the ruck is formed to secure the ball on the ground. Players will 'huddle' over the ball to protect it from being stolen, which can only be done on your feet, not on your hands and knees.
5) "phases" are movements between breakdowns, where possesion is maintained.
6) to score points, players have to place the ball over the oppositions 'try' line. That will give them 5 points, with access to and additional 2 points if they 'convert' a kick through the poles.
7) the conversion kick is taken at where the ball is placed in the try area, which is why players will try aim for the middle section of the posts, to make it an easier conversion kick i.e. in front of the posts
8) Cards: A yellow card can be given for several things, including dangerous play, constant penalities or if the ref is being silly. Each yellow card sends off one player for 10 mins from the team that gets it. A red card is 'you're heading to the changerooms' and the team will lose a player. In some instances, Red cards also carry suspensions as they take dangerous play seriously.
9)Out of Bounds: Players can kick the ball directly out. That will lead to a line out at the point at which the player kicked the ball. Alternatively, if the ball lands within the field of play THEN bounces out of the field of play, a line out is given at the point where the ball went out. Again, about gaining ground.
10) Line Outs: Line outs are when the ball goes out of play and needs to be thrown in. Opposition will throw if you kicked it out. They will also determine the number of players in the line out, be it 3, 5 or even the entire forward pack depending on the strategy.
11) Penalities: A dynamic way of penalising opponents. Often, when the game is played, 'advantage' can be called if your players have the ball as not to stop the game or advantage. If another penalty is called afterwards, or some error happens, you will backtrack to the point at where the previous penalty happened. "Advantage over" can also be called by the ref Penalities can be either a scrum or a 'release touch' where either the ball leaves the hands and is kicked out or back into the hands to play on from the spot. Depending on where you are on the field, would dictate what penality option you would use to your advantage.
12) Scrums: are penalities that occur mid field, where lineouts or other options fail. Players who get the advantage can call a scrum option. The forward pack, 1 to 8 will bundle together and interlock, whilst the scrummy, player 9, will insert the ball in between the scrum. The opposition 9 is also there to hassle him. The teams then contest for the ball by literally banding together and pushing the other team. Over the years, the call for the set place of the ball has changed, but it's "crouch, bind, set" now if I recall, which are commands to 'organise' and insure safety of such and force movement.

I realise that it can seem very overwhelming, but at the end of the day it's about good strategy and using it to gain ground to score the try. I hope more Americans learn the game and end up loving it too. USA should be in the top 10 easily, Japan is working really hard too. Needless to say, we are glad to see Chile in this year's world cup!

Rugby is a very big thing in South Africa. When the Springboks are not doing well, one can feel it everywhere one goes. And our Rugby is very well managed by its administrators. My blood is green.

The South African rugby team - the Springboks, is the only team in the world to have won the Rugby World Cup 4 times. Our greatest rivals are New Zealand's All Blacks; they are a worthy opposition, they make the Springboks work hard in a Rugby match.- if our team wins a match against them, blood (literally) swear and tears went into that match.

As a New Zealander I know if it’s not us it’s SA winning world cups 😂 but it’s nice to see other teams win here and there.
