Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung at 6:50 was a rather famous austrian parodistic pop band. They retired only a few years ago in 2019. The band's name literally translates to First General Unsettledness deriving from Erste Allgemeine Versicherung/First General Assurance which was a well known austrian insurance company. The band liked to fool around heavily both in their texts and performances. But in their songs there also exists an important socially critical undertone. Many of their songs are considered iconic. Ding Dong, Fata Morgana, Märchenprinz (fairy tale prince), Afrika, Banküberfall (bank robbery) songs that still crack me up today. Subversive humor before all of that PC nonsense.

Eidelweiss is a small white flower, the national flower of Austria.

Milli Vanilli, who had two or three of the top songs in 1989, won a Grammy for one of those songs, but it was revoked when it was learned that the two "lead singers" weren't actually singing but had been lip syncing. Oops!

The change in 1981 to 1983 is what we call "Neue deutsche Welle" (New german wave). It was a small episode, where music became much more crazy and open due to a new generation.
After this the charts opend up for a lot of different genres.

1988, 4th place - the EAV was a band who put on costumes. Different ones for each song! On stage.
And it was a very fun - but pretty socially critical band.
Edelweiss is a protected flower that grows in the alps.
I had to laugh about the Milli Vanilli package in 1989.

a lot of the songs from the 80's was also popular here in America. I even personally have them in my music library. There was also Tokyo Hotel and Rammstein that I have listen to. The you have Michael Schenker a great German guitarist for UFO and his own band and his brother Rudolf who was in the most famous German rock band of the late 70's and 80's The Scorpions. They had some of the largest concerts in that time audience wise.

I'm quite surprised that you haven't heard of Edelweiss - as most of the Americans I know knew that word...
"Edelweiss, Edelweiss, every morning you greet me. Small and white, clean and bright you look happy to greet me." might ring a bell - or bring Season vibes.

Edelweiss is a small, white flower found in the Alps. Edelweiss translates to "noble white" and it was seen as a symbol of noble purity, pure love and courage (as you had to climb on the mountains to get it). It is today fully protected and must not be picked - just remember if you plan to visit the Alps on your next trip to Europe.

And Edelweiss is also an Austrian beer brand.

To first No.5 is important to know, Nicole sang and win 1982 with the "Ein bisschen Frieden" in english "A little bit of peace" the European Song Contest wie have avery year. She sang that song in german, after winning she sang it in a few languages. If interesset in, here is the link for that. In that time people in germany got on the streets to demonstrat for freedom, against new wappons in Germany. So that song from her, was big look into the german soul.

4:55 No it is actually very easy to describe: A lot of these songs are Schlager, a very controversial style of music in Germany. Half of the population loves Schlager, the other half despises it as the hellish sputum that it is.

Since today marks the 2nd anniversary of the Russian attack on Ukraine, for me "Ein bisschen Frieden" by Nicole is the most important song on this list.
Even if it's not my taste. It's unbelievable that this song is now 42 years old and it just hasn't changed anything in the world.

5:40 Bruce & Bongo was actually a British duo and "Geil" didn't contain German vocals besides the title. However, the audience was willing to honour the acknoledgement of German slang.

The music of that time is called Synth Pop, which was the general sound that defined the 1980s 🎹

@MoreJps Things used to change back in the days. No way you could compare musics from you parents or grand parents like now. 80's 70's 60's 50's 40's music.. And the 80's were thePic of pop culture and experimention. 😎😎
That's why they are still trendy 45 years later.. (that's crazy by the way. Since back in the days, lsitening to 20 years old stuff was like listening to prehistorical stuff lol )
Sorry for my English.
German have the reputation to have bad testes in music. Even if they've produced cool stuff.
You should react to other european coutries.

Cheers. 💖
