How Has the COVID Pandemic Changed the World of Maiko/Geisha?

*The content is based on personal studies and experience
There is no intention of denying other theories and cultural aspects

Maiko are girls younger than 20 years old, who are in their training period to become a Geisha/Geiko which are professional entertainers.

These are the 3 points to distinguish between Maiko and Geisha/Geiko!

1. Hairstyle
2. Kimono and Obi
3. Shoes

Maiko use their own hair to tie up the special hairstyle and put on many ornaments, but Geisha/Geiko wear a wig and hardly have any ornaments.

Next, Maiko wear special kimono called 振袖 Furisode with very long sleeves and an obi that is so long (about 5~7m) it can almost reach the floor.

Also, the inside of their collar has a red color that represents youth or an unmarried woman. Geiko wear regular kimono with a typical obi knot that anyone is allowed to wear.

Lastly, Maiko wear special shoes called おこぼ okobo/ぽっくり pokkuri (called differently depending on the region), which are 10cm-tall heavy wooden geta with small bells in them. Geiko wear regular “草履 zori” that anyone would wear.

All of the special fashion that the Maiko have are meant to enhance their young beauty, or to help them train how to walk and move around properly by wearing heavy kimono and shoes on purpose.

I heard somewhere that Maiko dress in a flashier manner so their looks make up for their not-yet-perfected skills in the Geisha arts, meanwhile the Geisha dress more humbly, because it's their talent and performance that is supposed to steal the show, not their looks. Not sure if it's true though.

As i learned Japanese culture, the thing that i know about Meiko and Geiko is basically the more experienced they are, the less flashy they will be

I like japanese culture so much and I'd like to see it myself one day but nothing scares me more than Japan, I'm so scared of doing something that is considered rude.I am an Italian with ADHD so all the cards are playing against me

Here is a question, which Bow is harder to use/train with? The English Longbow or the Japanese Yumi?

I'm working on a comic (that some of it uses japanese culture & history) and i know pretty much nothing about the history and most of the japanese culture but your videos help so much! And they are very interesting

I have two geisha dolls at home and I didn't realize the differences until I saw this video. I can almost identify the variants of them.

Can I just point out how gorgeous the geiko is in this video? There really is a strict skill set and elegance to the art so of course once you become a master in it your clothes don’t need to compensate anymore and you are captivating enough with your skills alone.

I've learned that okobo are from the period when little girls still started their training at the age of six years, six months and six days. They were of course still very young and small when they became official maiko, so they wore high shoes to bring their faces closer to the level of the faces of their customers.

The trailing obi used to be fashionable among young women in general but nowadays it's only maiko who still wear them. Also they still each have the emblem of their okiya on the tail of the obi though the modern maiko are at least 15 years old and very well able to find their way home by themselves without getting lost and needing assistance, unlike their often very young predecessors.

I think a lot of the smaller details also have to do with just the place they are trained. A lot of videos I’ve watched and sources I’ve seen don’t really match up, other than the fact that maiko are generally dressed in a more flashy manner. The smaller details like how the lips are painted and the specific colors they dress in seems to depend on the traditions of their specific okiya.
