▼How Has the COVID Pandemic Changed the World of Maiko/Geisha?▼

Maiko are very famous for wearing white makeup, but it was originally meant for their faces to look brighter even in a time when there were only candle lights at night.

With just the white makeup, however, it would make their faces look pale and sort of like a ghost. Due to this, the people in the past believed that evil spirits might come and take away the Maikos' souls because of their pale-looking faces. In order to avoid that, they also applied some red makeup too.

Red is a color in Japan that represents life because it’s the color of the sun, fire, blood, and it was believed that it had the power to ward off bad luck and evil. This is why some of the 鳥居 Torii gates of Shinto shrines and the purifying cloth of tea ceremony also have the red color too.

So the reason why Maiko always has red makeup on is not just for fashion, but it has spiritual meanings too.

This is interesting because if in Japan red represents life, in ancient Egypt it represents death and bad luck instead.

They must have been insanely paranoid about evil spirits when they constructed all those red gates.

I knew a lot od things in this culture had spiritual origins but until following your channel i did not realize how much is related to spiritual reasons. Like... so many things can be traced back to spiritual beliefs!

Ghosts must be real pushovers if adding some red dye to some fabric or makeup scares them away
