Can You Become Geisha Without Experiencing Maiko? #Shorts

Generally, in order to become a geiko/geisha (a professional in the arts) one must train as a maiko for about five to six years during one's teenage years. However, to become a maiko, one must begin training at the age of 15 or 6. As a rule, if one misses that timing (age 15/16), they cannot become a maiko.

So, is it possible to suddenly become a geiko without having experienced being a maiko? The answer is yes and no. In fact, there are people who have become a geiko without having full experience as a maiko. I also say no, however, because it is not an easy thing to do.

The maiko live in a place called Okiya, where the landlady strictly teaches them etiquette and training every day. For five to six years, with hardly a day off, a maiko will practice singing, dancing, and playing the Japanese instruments every day, and gain experience at parties where she actually entertains guests.

It is very different between someone who becomes a geiko after gaining that much experience and earning human relationships and someone who suddenly becomes a geiko as an adult. Moreover, geiko work as freelancers, so if they are not capable, there is no work for them. An exceptional level of effort and endurance will be required to survive in the environment.

In Kyoto, the most part of women who directly debut as geiko become jikata (musician). It's easier than to be a tachikata (dancer) because she would have to learn geiko's dances but also all maiko's dances that maiko studie during years.

Another disadvantage of being a Geiko without the Maiko experience, I think, is that they lack the connection the other built during their Maiko days.
Like, Maiko already served customers and so they became known by the customers and if I´m not mistaken (source is from many mangas, animes, and youtube videos), customers can request a specific Geiko, can´t they? Which means a brand new, unknown Geiko would get less business than a Maiko turned Geiko who probably already had one or two regulars.

This system is similar to the one dancers and ballerinas must follow and be trained in! So intense, it really raises the bar and expectations.

I'm not sure if you've already done a video on this but I am curious to learn about why a teen/woman would choose this career, how family sees the career, and if they can leave if they change their mind. I am also curious how teens would entertain the men.

Thank you! ❤️

This is making me think of kokoro from dead or alive. She’s in training to become a geisha…but also her mom is a higher up in a company, where she might have slept with her boss…who, to be fair, slept around a lot

So, is being a geisha seen as something a mother would want for her daughter? Cause kokoro doesn’t really seem wholly committed to it.

Sounds like the Maiko landladies are/were more governesses/head mistresses of their academies for Maiko education.

If you’re a maiko and decide you don’t want to anymore can you not become a geico or can you quit as a maiko

I've always wondered about the requirements ever since watching "Memoirs of a Geisha" many years ago, since the MC skipped the Maiko part due to a story plot.Very interesting, thank you!😊

It’s be cool if you explained what these things are that you talk about. Idk what geiko is or what they do or what they need to be trained for in the first place. A little snippet of what your talking about would be awesome!
