Toilet Does NOT Stop Filling! Water Keeps Running

What to check and do if your toilet does not stop filling and the water keeps running. In this video I show you how to replace the toilet fill valve seal and then the fill valve itself. Our toilet kept leaking water into the bowl like this before and last time the problem was a leaking flapper. This time was a little different. The water kept refilling every few minutes and then started to constantly fill and go into the overflow tube. I was hoping I could get away with replacing only the seal but ended up having to replace the whole valve after all. If you are looking for specific instructions and measurements for the fill valve installation, the package it comes in should have that information included. Here are the two parts that I used in the video on Amazon:

A two-fer! Not only did you show how to replace a gasket, you also showed how to replace the entire valve! I haven't had to replace mine yet (operative word "yet"), but now that I have seen your video, I don't think that I would have to call a plumber to replace it for me. Thank you!

Thank you for an excellent video! I noticed my toilet making that whistling noise when other water was running a while ago. I didn't know how to resolve it until I noticed it whistling after flushing and the tank wouldn't stop filling. I'm not very handy but after watching your video, I felt confident I could replace the entire fill valve myself. I followed along and did the whole thing in under an hour, including the cleanup!

Your video was incredibly helpful and the extra tips and tricks put it over the top. Thank you again!

I've cleaned the grit out of the valve before but with the newer toilet I found it difficult. I watched a few other vids but your explanation was the clearest and easiest to follow. I'm going to buy the extra parts just in case since I live in a rural area far from town. Thanks, new subscriber here!

You should inspect the tank first!!!! If water is not going down the overflow tube then it's not the fill valve, it's the flapper. If it is draining down the overflow tube it's the fill

Never heard the whistle. If your fill valve to tank seal is good, you can release the locking ring and pull both valves apart and then inset top of the new one into base of stem still in tank. re-lock with ring. Done. No need to turn water off, disconnect water line, flush or sponge needed. Easy peasy.

Good video, I was lucky to just clean out the valve seal and it fixed the issue.

Toilets are going to run. Just make sure they stay hydrated. Maybe a little stretching couldn’t hurt either.

best to replace fill valve at the onset. They are not that expensive and easy to find then just the valve seal.

Hi Jay! I have two questions. When I flush my toilet and the water is leaving the bowl, it behaves as if it's flushing twice - the water pours out of the bowl for what seems an excessive period of time. What's causing that? How can I fix it?
Also, when the water is refilling, it's really loud. I didn't even know that could be a thing. But it is on my toilet. How do I make it quiet?
I wonder if these two problems are related. I replaced the fill valve almost 2 yrs ago.

Sooo, no plumber's putty or silicone grease on the rubber parts to make it even more leak proof?
