Debunking some heavy duty guitar myths with the help of my man Stich. Check out his channel if you haven't already:

We talk about advanced guitar lessons, beginner jazz lessons, not having to learn notes, why music theory sucks, the pick of destiny, having to buy an expensive guitar, and your hands being too small to play barre chords!

Listen to the new album:

A little about me:

Sean Daniel is a man. A man of simple needs and desires. And the one desire, no, the one NEED, that stands above all is to spread the challenges, joy and intellectual stimulus of music to people of Earth and beyond.
Born on the mean streets of upper middle class suburban Chicago, Sean learned the ways of the world through the dizzying heights of success to the lonesome depths of failure and emerged with the promise of a better tomorrow reflecting in his eyes and fiery passion in his belly.
He plays and teaches guitar on his YouTube channel where he regularly releases original music and projects to the adulation of legions of fans, who often compare him to Chris Pratt and one time Ryan Reynolds. He’s currently in the market for a nice leather jacket.

Great video guys. I used to think my hands were to small to play guitar until I put in enough time on it to let my hands develop. Also, so glad to hear someone else point out that Hendrix had to known or at least had a basic understanding of music theory. I get so tired of hearing people say he knew nothing about it as if all those great songs and solos poured out if his @$$ like magic.

You know, if you guys had a podcast, I'd listen the heck out of it

Sean, to a small extent, you contributed to a couple of these myths. You have multiple videos discussing pick selection. Material composition, size, thickness, etc. And you mention your favorite guitars in a few videos and they are always pretty fancy and expensive guitars. Don't get me wrong, I love your product recommendations. My first set of picks that I ordered after watching your pick videos arrived today- Dunlop Jazz IIIs. And I have pre-ordered the 1962 Strat Reissue coming out is August, which I first started thinking about when you mentioned that your 1962 Reissue from the Vegas Guitar Center was your favorite. Anyway, you're great. Don't go changing. Great video. PS. I had to go back to see that I didn't imagine this . You said "improvising a hard thing to teach, you have to just get out there and do it" (3:10), sitting next to Ian Stich who's sole mission on YouTube is to teach people how to improvise.

I was listening to, and enjoying, the mean comments video and, while I can't admire enough your flawless good taste in choice of competent and companionable collaborators, I especially appreciate your accessible and easy (confident) musical fluency, specifically your clear articulation, unsparing levity and practical demonstrations. The only alteration I wish you'd make, which is really an addition and no alteration at all, is to ask that you publish a "content guide/table" suggesting, for the inveterate-ly clueless-like me, the most advantageous order in which your videos should be viewed.

here, the crease in my index finger coincides nicely with the G string, so, i can make barre, but never first time, and it depends on the guitar (the frets). also, in the last year i've developed a groove in my second finder tip from playing D a lot, so the first time i pick up any guitar and play a D shape it buzzes. i have weird anatomy, digitally speaking. love this vid, you two have rapport.

Thank you for making me laugh at myself and other musicians who are still trying to figure the simple things out! You guys are awesome!

This video is actually hilarious! I've heard the small hands myth so many times, I just want to shake people and tell them they can do it!

Wow, I played like 45 years (Seriously!) without knowing any music theory. The last 2 years painfully learning MT changed me from playing _with_ the guitar to playing the guitar. Now I'm ready for that beginners' jazz course.

Probably way before your time, but there used to be a radio show called Car Talk on NPR. Two brothers would give repair advice and you would laugh the entire time. Yet the advice was solid. You guys really remind me of them. They were enormously successful. Check them out when you need a break from your MILFs. You are both very entertaining on your own, but what a team you make.

I liken learning Music Theory to putting a puzzle together in total darkness. You can do it by "feel" but learning theory turns on a light (albeit dim at first) that makes it easier to put those pieces together. YOU still have to put them together, but learning theory is the light that assists you with doing that. Once you can "See" how music works, and, most importantly, APPLY it to that hunk of wood and strings in your hands your playing will VASTLY improve...

I got you both beat, my dad was a jazz bassist(Graduated from Schillinger), I was taught theory on piano, violin, and Cello, but by the time I got into guitar, I didn't want to "ruin the feeling" by applying theory to guitar. I played decades before realizing I WAS an IDIOT!!! In fact, I only knew the 6th & 5th strings note for note....Now I'm doing everything to catch up. Re-learning is twice as hard

Hey Sean, awesome video!
One of the biggest guitar myths I had to deal with while learning is that if you start learning how to play on an electric guitar you won't get as good as someone who started playing on an acoustic, i.e, you'd have to learn on an acoustic guitar first if you want to be a better guitar player!
Of course I didn't take that advice and I started off on an electric 8 years ago and I'm still playing while my peers who started on acoustics got bored with them and stopped playing. It's a matter of what you love imho, but I think that might be a good myth (or MILF) to bust on your next video!

Another great vid, about hands. Django Reinhardt only had two fingers on his fretting hand ✌️

I would love to see you guys do a video on what you think should be inclued in the syllabus of lessons to get you into the advanced intermediate and beyond player.

I played the guitar for 24 years before I started learning music theory. And now I consume it voraciously. I taught myself how to play by ear. But then in 2014 when I got my first smart device and discovered YouTube it was on like donkey Kong. If you love making music you owe it to yourself to learn all you can about the art you love. It has made me a much better guitarist. Thank you for the videos and the knowledge.

Just saying, you both have given me a massive boost in my guitar self proficiency and I honestly can't thank you enough🖒
