True bypass doesn't make for a longer signal chain as you mentioned. It's more to do with impedance. A lower level impedance is able to travel further without noticeable signal degradation. To ensure your signal is low impedance the buffer is typically desired at the start and end of your chain. Obviously the length of your initial cable would impact the high end roll off before you get to the first buffer though

During kyuss period Josh used the neck pick up with very high gain fuzzes and bass guitar amps. Since the the first album of QotSA until Songs for the Deaf period he also used bass guitar amps and high gain fuzzes, but now with the bridge pick up, and here we can already realize some changing in his sound. Since lullabyes he stopped using that ovation guitar and bass guitar amp too (at least a guess he didn't used the bass amps anymore). His tone changed a lot since, he used a lot of different stuff along this last years.

But thicker strings definitely sound thicker. Jimmy page and billy gibbons sounded massive because they used cranked 100w amps. If i use 9's and hit one of the top strings very hard, it chokes very quickly and has a very thin tone compared with thicker strings.

Actually true bypassis better because yiur guitar signal doesnt have to flow throuhg the whole circuit in the pedal to get passed along the chain
