Holy Koolaid's 'Nothing Fails Like Bible History 10: Joshua, Judges, & Genocide' (A Review Video)

Holy Koolaid (aka Thomas Westbrook) has produced a video challenging the historicity of the Israelite Conquest. In this video, we review that challenge to see if it holds water.

Correction: I said that Kenyon mentioned the discovery of a destruction layer on vol. 3 page 17. Kenyon did not discover that destruction layer (that was actually Garstang, "The Story of Jericho," Rev. Ed. [London: 1948], 123-124 and 141); however, she does mention it in vol 3, page 2, “The evidence suggested that there was a gap after the end of the Middle Bronze Age, and that a Late Bronze Age town had been destroyed c. 1300 B.C.”

The explanation of Deut. 3:5-6 at minute 26:00 on to 29:00 explains why we should not expect a destruction layer at all the cities and towns mentioned. It is the people that were put under herem— which can mean banished. Even if the people were killed, the point is the Israelites then occupied those cities and towns. Attempts to find evidence of the conquest based on destruction layers in the 60 cities and towns mentioned will never happen BECAUSE they were not physically destroyed. Only 3 were and we do find evidence at two sites and recent info now shows a destruction layer in the 1200’s for Jericho. Holy Koolaid is not up to date on modern textual analysis.

I find it amusing how holykoolaid goes from "let's talk about historical archaeological evidence" to a childish rant about "religion = bad, religion = war, Israel vs Palestine is 100% religion's fault" to "I'm not trying to convince you of anything."

I think HK was raised in a hardcore literalist Christian home and assumes there is no other way to interpret the Bible. Therefore, all Christians have to be creationists in his view. His underlying assumptions of Christianity basically prevent him from actually engaging with scholarly material, or you could be right that he's merely pandering to those who think exactly like him.

He also complains about literalism of the Bible while he has to do that exact thing to make his point. Oh the irony.
