I need to work on this a bit with my dog. She barks at birds which is fine because she chases them but I need her to stop barking at my neighbors while they enter their backyard! Thanks for this! So far she’s done ok if I recall her and have her stay with me.

The "leave it" command comes in very handy after which you redirect your dogs attention to what you want them to actually do with a lot of praise once they focus on you for directions 💯

My dachshund will just sit on the couch and bark at nothing sometimes, so I'm definitely gonna have to take these into consideration 😅

Live on a farm next to a highway (that never used to be a highway 😉). Have gotten used to my dog barking. I can understand her various types of barks and what they mean. Many types of wild animals out here and she has a bark for just about every critter. I'd have to say the most loudest crazy barking is when shes alerting a deer or fawn when not to cross the highway... seriously, they will freeze and listen to her and turn around and go the other way. She doesnt care for the new groundhog and lets it know to stay TF away from her turf...lol...when the cyotes are out on the prowl for food, she sits very quietly on the stoop and listens intently to their communication amongst the pack. I wont ever leave her alone outside due to the yotes, and when they get closer to my back 40' she'll stand up, look at me, and we go inside.

We had to give up on having our mini schnauzer downstairs overnight. She was so good for over a year, barking maybe once a month, but then there was a time when she barked every few hours every night for weeks.
I used to sit with her for 20 minutes while she went to sleep as a routine thing, so this meant that I was getting all of no sleep and was passing out at work. And this was with 2+ hours of good exercise per day (recommended 30-90 minutes).

The schnauzer owning community is great for obedience training, toilet training and socialisation, it's really knowledgeable about diet and illness, and they're real disciplinarians for behaviours on lead and around other dogs. But my god are they spineless when it comes to dogs in the bed. We put our problem to them and just got "oh, we keep all 16 of ours in the bed and they love it", "oh but I couldn't have mine sleep anywhere else", "she just wants to be in the bed!"

I partly blame my parents. We'd started off with her as a puppy while we were living with the in-laws – at their detached house, we were able to let her bark herself out and detach the behaviour from getting attention. At our new house, it's semi-detached so no amount of night barking was acceptable and I'd have to go downstairs to calm down and reset the nighttime routine. But at my parents, they lasted with her downstairs for all of five minutes before they had her on the bed. I reckon she decided that was what she liked and just broke us down unttil she got it.

My dog barks and growls at mealtimes. I find that picking him up and putting him down on his bed usually helps
