“The King of Parody.” His fans really don’t care if he’s hip, either you like him or you’re just wrong 😂

Weird Al is a serious rabbit hole. This is one of my favorite songs of his. Others include Amish Paradise and Word Crimes. For this song, he actually wrote it before Phantom Menace was released. He wrote the (mostly complete) lyrics based on trailers and leaks on Star Wars forums. When he went to get permission from George Lucas to do it and get his blessing, Lucas told him a couple details for minor edits, but he got almost the entire story into this song before even seeing the movie. George Lucas loves this song, by the way. So does Don McLean, the guy who wrote American Pie, and has even admitted to having to stop himself from singing the wrong lyrics in concert.

I don't think there's anybody else who could parody an epic song like American Pie and actually do it justice. What a talent.

You've got about 40 years of Weird Al music to catch up on now!

Weird Al is legit one of the most talented entertainers alive today. He can sing, dance, write, rap, act and can shred on accordion. His live shows are hilarious and one of the best concerts you'll ever see.  I've been to a few and have even met Al a couple times!

Honestly, Weird Al is one of the greatest artists of the last 40 years, but because he does "comedy" he doesn't get the respect he is due. He is in my top 10 favorite artists.

Weird Al is incredibly talented. He wanted to parody Nirvana but he couldn't get in touch with them, he found out Nirvana was going to be on Saturday Night Live so he called SNL to get in touch with them because he always asks for permission before he does it, he got Kurt Cobain on the phone and Kurt thought it was a prank, then realized it was real and told Weird Al he could do a parody as long as it wasn't about food. Kurt said you know you made it when Weird Al parodies one of your songs.

His 1st Star Wars parody was Yoda, a parody of the Kink’s Lola. Honestly all his songs are gold. He is just so good with lyrics.

I went to school with this guy. When I was in high school, he worked on the Doctor Demento show in LA, and was on the radio in the background. When I went college, (yes, I really went to college) he was at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo working at the campus radio station. In 1978 (yes I went to college in the 70's) I spent the summer in the Dorms, and one morning at 3:00 am, the girls woke us up (the whole dorm), and gave us donuts. Of course, we had to return the favor, so we got someone at the campus radio station to say "its time to WAKE UP!" (at 3:00am). That person was none other than Weird Al Yankovich. Its nice to have meaningful connections to important events in history.

For the record, Coolio came out later and admitted his objection to Weird Al's parody, even after seeing how innocuous Amish Paradise was, was a dumb mistake that he'd apologized for. I'm honestly shocked you've never heard of him, here in America there is no higher praise for a musician than to be honored with a Weird Al parody as he only writes them for songs he personally likes.

Edit: if you'd like a recommendation of his original works I strongly recommend One More Minute. He wrote it right after a breakup and purportedly rips his actual exes pictures apart in the music video.

I have never seen Weird AL do this song before. It's definitely one of his most serious tributes. Most of his songs include a lot of satire and silliness, bordering absurdity. Great choice, Diane.

Don Maclean has said that he has mixed up this and his American Pie in concert because his kids played this song so much.

I have seen Al in concert 4 times, and they aren't really concerts but an experience. If he tours in Europe again, you would truly have an awesome time, Diane.

Best concert I've ever been to. He's had the same band for like 40 years so they're incredibly tight and they were great musicians to start with. He does lightning fast costume changes for almost every song and he plays short comedy clips while changing.
The crowd when I went ranged from toddlers to geriatrics (like me) and everybody had a good time. He keeps the comedy coming for the whole show but it's totally clean. You won't hear a cuss word come out of him.

His best song that was original, is "Spend one more minute with you." A 50s doo-wop inspired song that quickly goes off the rails.

Weird Al is always good for brightening the day, but seeing Diane's reaction is icing on the cake

He wrote the ENTIRE song based on INTERNET rumors of the film BEFORE it was released and nailed the plot perfectly.

I sometimes feel bad that I like this song better than the movie it’s based on😅

It's amazing that the most normal Weird Al has ever looked is when he's doing Star Wars cosplay

5:52 I sometimes forget how massively talented Weird Al is, he can pull absurd stuff off & I love it.

Back in the 1980's, he had a thing where he would constantly parody Michael Jackson. In a department store, there was a big display with Micheal Jackson's album Bad. On the cover MJ is wearing a red leather jacket with a ridiculous number of zippers. The display was 3 LP's high, but the bottom record was Weird Al's Even Worse. WA was wearing a similar jacket with even more zippers.
