Weird Al is an absolute legend. If he parodies your song, you know you’ve done well in life.

The great thing about Weird Al is his parody songs are rarely mean spirited or cruel. Probably why he’s been so successful for so long. He’s impossible to hate. Having a ‘Weird Al’ version of your song would be a badge of honour.

It's a little unnerving how many genres Weird Al can cover without sounding strained. Dude's got talent.

You can't forget when Al asked Prince if he could do "When Spuds Fry" and Prince said no. Prince then asked Al not to even look in his direction at the next Grammys, to which Al replied "As long as you don't look in my direction"

The only acceptable reaction to Weird Al parodying you is to be in awe and extreme happiness to finally making it.

The best part about getting Cobain's permission was how he did it.
Al could not get through to Nirvana, at first. Nirvana's record company wouldn't let him through.
Then, when Nirvana was appearing on SNL, Al had an in. SNL cast member Victoria Jackson also worked in Al's movie, UHF, as Al's girfriend. He called Victoria and asked her to bring Kurt to the phone. It was awkward, but Kurt went along, and was quite pleased to find Weird Al on the line. He was only happy to give permission for a parody, but asked, "is it gonna be about food?"
"No, " Al replied. "It's about how no-one can understand your lyrics."
Kurt agreed anyway, and as Dave Grohl tells the story, they were very nervous before watching the video, but ended up laughing hysterically.

James Brown was so supportive of "Living with a Hernia" he gave Weird Al not just permission, but the original props from his own music video and the contact info for his backup singers.

Some artists are happy to go Platinum.
Some artists are happy to win a Grammy.
Some artists are happy to sell out a sports stadium or perform during Super Bowl half-time.
But to have Weird Al Yankovic be given an artist's blessing to parody their most popular song is the greatest achievement earned.

Weird AL deserves to be in the rock n roll hall of fame due to his multi generational popularity, a number of hit singles and albums, and his creativity.

I love how most artists have enough sense of humor to laugh at the parodies! Way to go!

Cool dynamic he had with Michael Jackson. Could parody his songs and even get access to his stage but agreed Black or White was too sentimental to parody. Respect.

huge respect to coolio for knowing what very few do, to admit when you're wrong or out of line. r.i.p to a legend.

Apparently members of The Knack were so delighted with Al's "My Balogna" that they asked him to come up on stage and sing it at one of their concerts. And this was when Al was almost unknown.

Also, when Al was mulling over the idea of writing his parody "Jurassic Park, " he contacted three people to get their blessing--author Michael Crichton, director Steven Spielberg, and "MacArthur Park" singer Richard Harris. All three expressed enthusiastic support!

*I can't believe you guys didn't mention Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits! When Weird Al wanted to parody Money For Nothing (Beverly Hillbillies), he had his team reach out to Dire Straits for permission. Mark Knopfler called Weird Al directly and told him that he had their blessings, with one condition. When Al asked what it was, Knopfler told him he had to play guitar on the Beverly Hillbillies track. Al's response to the request of one of the greatest guitar players wanting to perform on his parody? "Well... OKAY!"*

I just love the fact that al and his parodies have remained relevant longer than some of the artists and songs he's parodied.

Weird Al is a class act. He always tries to reach out to the artists directly before moving forward with his parodies. He’s also just an overall wonderful dude! Had the chance to meet him when I was in middle school, super gracious and fun to talk to!

Weird Al personally called Kurt while they were on the set of SNL, not only did he get to hear it he's the one who approved it. "That's when I knew we had made it..." Some people only think of the dark side of Kurt Cobain, not his amazing sense of humor, it's a crying shame.
